A modern, stainless "Panda" alternative?
So was perusing watches on the internet (what else is new), and came across this:
http://www.omegawatches.com/gents/sp...32330404004001 A relative bargain when compared with vintage stainless Pandas, or the modern white gold rendition, as it can easily be had for under $2,500, but still a damn fine watch. |

yes, speedmaster is a great looking watch, but two issues,I've always had, but have never really articulated: 1) the two chronograph buttons on the side always make the watch look(and maybe feel?) too 'heavy', and 2) re-sale value.

Love the Speedy and that one pushes many of the right buttons for me; date feature and two tone sub dials. However, I'd still prefer a Tudor chrono as it has the iconic oyster case, cyclops, and screw down pushers and crown.

It is a nice watch, retails here for £2100, if I remember correctly. Just seems a little small on my wrist, it's a 40mm compared to the 42mm of the Speedmaster Pro

There is still a lot arguing about its reliability. Based on a Piguet 1285 movement, early on there were several batches with problems. The co-axial version 3313 continued with difficulties. Omega claims to have corrected the problems, however many , including some ADs known to do business on the forums, advise to still steer clear especially the Co-axial version. Of course many have had no problems at all so, YMV.
Of course the Speedy Pro with the 1861 is a reliable classic and Valjoux 7751 speedys are nice too. |

I'm not personally a fan of rhodium plating. It tarnishes over time.

Rhodium typically gets used in precision machinery, partly because of the ease/inexpensiveness of plating mass parts with rhodium, partly because the thinness of the application does not significantly change the dimensions of the plated object (chrome requires up to three layers of nickel, copper and chrome), and partly because of rhodium's superior resistance to oxidation. |

I apologize to B. Doggy for questioning his statement on rhodium.
Upon study, I have learned that jewelers typically use rhodium for its appearance and not for its resistance to corrosion or its thin layer. I had somehow confused rhodium with cadmium in my mind, as I have some past experience with cadmium. The qualities I attributed to rhodium better apply to cadmium. |
