Future value of Explorer 1, ref 114270, speculation

So, it seems the 36mm Explorer 1, model ref 114270, is now being discontinued in favour of the new 39 mm version.

This means the 36mm version will no longer be produced.

It also means the 114270 production run has been relatively short... or?

Any thoughts on what all this might do to the future value of the 114270 and, more generally, to the 36mm Explorer 1 overall?

Cheers

I think it will go down in the long run... as 39mm's come into the used market. That said, if Rolex keeps jacking up their prices like they have been, every watch will be going up in value to some extent!

Personally I don't think any of the modern Rolexes will go up in value significantly, there are so many out there unlike the vintage pieces.

I have read otherwise. Rolex plan is to sell both sizes from as noted from a reliable European Rolex source...

The 114270 has been in production for ten years. That is not a short run. It also came into production at a time when the interest for the Explorer started to grow. I would say that Rolex sold more of the 114270 than the earlier 14270 (that also was in production for ten years).

If the big watch trend continues, I'd say that the Explorer will be as popular as the previous Air-King. If the big watch trend fades out, I'd say that the 14270 and 114270 will be more popular.

I would not "invest" in a 114270.

Best,

A

Interesting! AD I spoke to the other day said they can't order the 114270s any longer.

Anyone else heard anything about this?

The trend right now is to wear a larger watch. This is just a style that I think will change in time. Styles come and styles go and I believe this one will eventually change and when it does, the 36mm will go up in value. Each generation wants to show their individuality by doing the opposite of the previous generation.

Great input ! I guess the 114270 with the engraved rehaut/flange came in 2007 though and hence has (had) a slightly shorter run.

I would doubt if any modern explorer with or without the Reheat markings will become collectible if you want a collectible explorer get a 1016.

Exactly--don't buy a Rolex as an investment or plan on it going up as it won't-unless again you own a vintage piece.

Also the 114270 is not listed in the new September 15th price sheet. So I'm sure it can't be ordered anymore....

exp

guess theres no real way to know how collectable any of the current stuff is, figure like other Rolex they will be somewhat desirable in 20/30 yrs.. maybe they will start holding there value a little better if anything as the larger models become common on the used market, I like the looks in pics of the larger model and want to see one in person, and will be interested if its not significantly thicker or heavier. wish they put a maxi dial and min hand on it tho..

Right now I am very comfy with the 36mm exp ! and have no desire to strap on a larger heavier sport model anymore..
