What is happening outside your window today?

Building a house.

Preparations on their way, for yet another floor to be built.

Yep, everything looks good.

But just in case, better climb over and stand on the outside, holding on to the structure with only one hand. This is at the top of the building, so "pretty" high up. And as you can see, no safety strap or anything like that. These guys are tough, to say the least!

Cheers,
Joe

I can look at those pix in the knowledge that I will never ever see that in Australia.

A total lack of attention to safety.

Tough? haha 'stupid' is a better description.

The last time I was in Shanghai, the skyline was littered with huge construction cranes. Back then, I noticed that many scaffold structures were made of bamboo, which amazed me. We were in China doing consultation and education for ER doctors at emergency hospitals (the Ruijin Hospital in Shanghai) and the number of construction workers injured on the job was staggering. We were also struck by the number of bicycle and pedestrian accidents.

I am very thankful that I do not have to do that type of work for a living. That would be pretty tough.

Life is cheap in China, I doubt that the family of that worker would be able to sue if he took a fall....

The bamboo scaffolding has always amazed me. That technique is used in HK as well. Actually it is quite ingenious...

This doesn't surprise me at all. (unfortunately)

The traffic here is, well shall we call it "a bit unorthodox"... (though much better compared with many other places)

Cheers,
Joe

No wonder the cost of bamboo shoots has risen so sharply.

What struck me about those photos is that the sky looks reasonably clear and blue. I thought nowadays one can only see smoke and smog in Shanghai. Obviously they are cleaning the chimneys.

^^

Yeah, of course we have smog here - as in any mega city. But, and even though I must admit that I complain quite often about the air quality here, it isn't that bad "as you might believe".

We have days when it's much clearer then in that picture (also remember, it's taken through a pretty dirty window). But unfortunately, of course we also have days when you rather not go outside. Again, as with any mega city.

Cheers,
Joe

China is a fantastic country, I'd love to live there one day soon.
Southern China that is, the north is too cold during winter
