Greetings from a newbie

Hi fellow Rolex enthusiast,

Although I am not yet an owner of a Rolex watch yet, I have been spending sometime reading some of the posts in this forum trying to learn as much as I can before taking that 'plunge'.

At this point my choice for the first Rolex watch would be the SD 16600. It was based on the 'cleaner' look w/out the cyclop and its slightly more exclusive status than the Sub ... although I may be wrong on that notion.

My question to you, Rolex owners, revolves around your experience at the time when you bought your first one.
Aside knowing that you are dealing with an AD, how did you confirm that the watch was genuine ? Are there ways to guard against spending $5K-$6K for a fake ?
Would it be blasphemous to ask an AD for a discount ? When I bought my Panerai PAM 48, I did ask for a discount and got an extra set of leather straps. A local Tutima dealer offered a 10% discount on an FX UTC.

Any advise would be appreciated.

W/best regards,
Han

Welcome to the TRF Han like you my favourite Rolex sports is the SD.Now if you buy from a Rolex AD you will be 100% sure of buying a genuine watch. But there are other sources like the various forums, check ours now with them you buy the seller not so much the watch. But if you do your homework, check them out, you sometimes get a bargain. Now the grey market dealers non Rolex authorised, you sometimes get cheaper but you will not get the Rolex guarantee, and not as safe as AD.But the grey dealer will give you a warranty on watch, should anything go wrong. Now at ADs you must ask for a discount yourself don't be afraid to bargain. What discount is up to you,now on the sports SS models don't expect much around 5%-15% if you are lucky.Perhaps more on a good day or none at all, then just find another who will give you a discount good luck.

Welcome to TRF, Han.

The SD would be an excellent first Rolex choice. It's a great watch and tough as nails. And....never, never, never feel shy to ask any AD for a discount. Remember....you are the customer....and the customer is always RIGHT!!

Good luck - JJ

Padi, Al, JJ, and The Prez,

Thanks for the warm welcome and the advise.
I'll post pictures as soon as the SD is my wrist (which is NOT soon enough).

Best regards,
Han
