AD nonsense
Had a call from one of the ADs who’s Daytona list I am currently on. I was told that they have a SS Daytona with a white face dial, I was very excited as this is what I have waited for.
I was told it was not my time on the list as there are still several in front of me bla bla ect. The dealer advised that he was aware of my LV Sub (I wore it in the store while shopping) Long story short, part of the Daytona deal is a trade on my LV Sub. Supposedly there is a customer who wants one and they don’t currently have one in stock. Like a typical car sales man I only have two days and if I don’t accept there is another customer who will take the deal. This is a new low for salespeople, I can’t believe they have a SS Daytona but can’t get an LV Sub? And what’s with this rush if you don’t take the deal someone else will? If that’s the case call your second person. What would you do? LV Subs don’t grow on tress in my neck of the woods; I had a very hard time finding the watch. I do not deal with the grey market so I would have to start all over working and searching ADs. I am on several SS Daytona lists and in time my number will come. |

personally i have seen lots of LVs and the demands for ss daytonas is far greater. i would go with the daytona- but you dont sound too fussed, and if you are on lots of daytona lists maybe you would rather hang on and tell this AD where he can go...

I agree, I'd have to know the details. The SS Daytona is very hard to come by.

$7,900 for the Daytona
$5,000 trade in credit for the LV (plus tax credit) Aprox. $2,000 and change out of pocket for the price difference As you can see this is no stellar deal, I loose over $500.00 on the trade (as I paid list price on the LV Sub)and get no discount on the SS Daytona as they don’t have to discount them. That is the so-called deal. |

If you want a Daytona and are no longer in love with the LVSub I'd say GO FOR IT...
Personally I wouldn't do it... however I prefer a dive watches to a chronos.

Well considering that the SS Daytonas are being sold for 10 - 11,000 here in California (after being on a list), that doesn't sound bad. Why not do the trade, sell the Daytona for full price BNIB and then buy another LV and come out a couple grand in the black...lol |

If you get more than you paid for your LV as your trade in value and only pay MSRP for the daytona, go for it.
Just make sure you get another LV sub before the price increases (not suggesting that its going to happen soon).

Keep the SUB. The Daytona is nice, but shy from anything that is "the rage" for artificial reasons. This SS Daytona thing (false rarity) will end some day and they will do it with another watch. Keep the watch you like, and don't be put into a pressure situation to make a big decision. You say 2K and some change. Looks closer to 3K out of pocket to me. Bird in the hand.

Used LV Sub's are going for $4500-$4750. and are plentiful at those prices. New SS-Daytona's (Z-series) are going for $9000.-$10,000. You can do the math.

I would do it. It will cost you more than $500 in your time looking for the next SS Daytona again. LV is a lot easier to get. I found mine in less than a week from AD here.

If the Daytona is what you really want, then go for it.
The deal seems to be fair as you are getting a SS Daytona for LIST and the LV trade for about $525 less than list (what it cost you). So you only lose about 10% on the LV on the trade. ![]() As has been said before, you can get another LV at list much easier than a SS Daytona (with white dial as you want) at list, and an LV 2nd hand even easier and cheaper. I would have thought an AD would have screwed you harder on that sort of deal. BTW, it is a Z Series Daytona isn't it? Good luck, and keep us posted. John. |

If you want the Daytona, I'd do it. I can pick up a clean used LV for under $5k any day of the week and twice Sunday.

I would do it. I think of it like this:
Buy the Daytona at list, lose ~500 on trading in LV. Look around and buy new LV at list. Now you have a brand new, never worn LV, and a brand new from an AD SS Daytona, and it all only cost you $500 over list. So when it comes down to it, the way I see it, you're paying $500 over MSRP for a BNIB Daytona from an AD! And I'm one that believes the value of a Rolex coming from an AD vs. Grey is priceless. |

Today I called the salesperson back, I told him that the sale of the Daytona should not be conditional, why on earth should I be required to trade in my LV Sub at a loss ($500.00 I paid list price)in order to buy another watch? I advised that I should be able to outright buy the Daytona.
I was reminded that my number for a Daytona was not up yet, I told the associate that this number system is for fools as there is no way to track who truly has entitlement to any arriving Daytona watches. I then criticized his lack of honesty with the use of this so called “fair” system, how would you feel if you were next for a Daytona and they undercut you in order to sale an additional USED LV Sub? I told the salesperson that there would be no trade, that he could also remove my name from their list as I would not buy a Daytona from them if they had a dozen of them. The salesperson thought he was being smooth when he said “Well the second person we called has agreed to the offer and he will buy the watch by the end of business tonight.” I told the salesperson “Good you sold a watch but lost a customer.” I wish executives from Rolex would read this information, it is very unprofessional how authorized dealers are conducting business with the artificially created rarity of the Daytona. It is extremely unfortunate how authorized dealers are tarnishing the Rolex name by behaving poorly with low levels of ethics and outright dishonesty when dealing with Daytona sales. I know of an AD who has a SS black Daytona (right now today) and wants several thousand dollars over cost (that’s why he still has it) he knows he is being unethical about the terms as he whispers about the watch and will not quote you a price over the phone when you go into his store to see the watch he advises “Rolex does not care what I charge for the product.” If this is the honest truth, then Rolex must view their loyal consumers as a bunch of sheep or fools who are not worthy of an honest fair business transaction. Since 1989 when I started buying Rolex, I have owned eight Rolex watches, like many of you I know for fact I have directly influenced others to buy Rolex. This entire saga (two years) of searching for a Daytona has left a poor taste in my mouth, it is to the point where I have lost interest in the watch and view it as an outright scam. I can respect Daytona owners and have no issue with them. So please do not take this as an attack on Daytona owners as it is not. I am personally not willing to pay thousands over cost, I have already waited two years and I will wait no longer, its money Rolex will never see. Thanks for all of you input on the topic I am amazed by the eagerness of the outstanding members of this forum to help out. That is why it truly is the Finest Rolex Forum. |

Tombtone. great write up. I will give the ADs I have talked to a chance to teat me fairly. If they do not, I will not buy from them ever again and may never buy another Rolex. If you think about vicarious liability in this Rolex is ultimately responsible if they allow this to happen.
However I am sure that Rolex is not allowing its ADs to hang on to SS Daytonas from customers once they deliver theme to an AD. They would not be happy if ADs are holding them for ransom so to speak telling customers they can have one if they jump through this hoop or pay this price. It would be interesting for all of us if you let Rolex know about the scruples of the AD with Black SS Daytona and how he is trying to get more money for it. You should call Rolex. Rolex should do the right thing. That AD needs a spanking. Grey market mark up? Ok. Rolex AD pulling scams and braging that Rolex does not care... ![]() ![]() |
