What's up? Another 1655 w/dial issues from reputable seller on ebay

This one is still up from Demesy

http://************/showthread.php?t=150305

http://cgi.ebay.com/Rolex-Explorer-I...item19c08730c4

And now this one from Robert Maron.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ROLEX-VINTAGE-EX...item2eb0322961

The dials seems the same: "T Swiss T" with incorrect rounded coronet; the "T"'s inside the minute hash marks; the "L" in Rolex all the way to the left of the coronet.

Demesy on the left. RM on the right. Correct dial variations from Stefano's blog below.

What gives

Thx Pav. I also just noticed in Stefano's pictures that all of the authentic dials have the "II" after "EXPLORER" more or less aligned under both letters "DA" in "DATE"

Note that the Demesy dial appears to have an additional flaw in that the "II" is positioned almost entirely under the "A"

Also note the similarity between the two dials on the high priced sites with this being offered on ebay as so-called "refinished" by seller often called out here on TRF (although ironically this one is nearer to the correct originals with respect to the location of the "L" in "ROLEX" and the "II" after "EXPLORER" Go figure

Great find. Maron has been discussed here before on TRF. I'd think he would know better, but sometimes these guys can't resist the temptation to pull something over on the "unknowing but willing" buyer.

What makes it even more galling is this attempt at "educating" buyers about the nuances of 1655 dials! What's needed is more research and verifying, less faux educating:

"Here is a vintage Rolex Explorer II orange hand "Steve McQueen" from 1975. On these Explorer II watches, in the middle of their production period, the orange hand started becoming reddish in color, as is the case with this watch. This is a good example of a mid production 1655, from 1975, which illustrates how the dial changed: namely, the font changed from a "slab serif" to the serif style font shown in the pictures below, and the shape of the Rolex crown on the dial also changed to this more elongated version."

Yeah, right.

The other thing I noticed and gave me a red flag was the case back stamp, where I looked at about 15-20 1655 across chrono24, HQmilton and tropical watches, non of them has the Font for the "M" where the inner "V" touches the floor like the 2 sides of the "M". The "O" is a lot rounder, and the most significant is the "X" where Rolex font is 2 straight line crossing, where the "X" on this is almost )(.

Yeah, right.
