Just out of curiosity - I wonder why they went with screw pins instead of the quick release system that is on every other 1950 3 Days?? Perhaps drilling into the lugs underneath would have weakened the composite too much??

No pricing info has been released but I'm guessing it would be between the 8k and 10k mark. They may go with the new quick release system since this one appears to be a prototype IMO.

I'm not so sure about this. On the two lugs where the release would be, you'd have holes going in and converging on 2 axes from 3 directions. That would make one corner of the lug very compromised. The composite might not be able to withstand that, either breaking a high percentage of time during manufacture, or perhaps it compromises longevity.

The box Luminor 1950 and the bridge protecting the crown are made of composite Panerai ®, a synthetic ceramic used in high watchmaking first by Officine Panerai, created by an electrochemical process involving the transformation of aluminum. The big brown dial, unadorned, has sandwich construction consisting of two superimposed layers containing the Super-LumiNova ® forming the numerals and hour markers fluorescent. Let's break this one down...

The way I see it, the closest watch to it is the 351 due to the brown dial. I will say though, based on the color differences in these photos - the 386 seems to have the more traditional Panerai tobacco shade than the almost imperceptible brown on the newer models.

Anyway... swap the titanium for composite, swap the modern lume for patina lume, and the gilt hands for black hands. If you go by the photos, the quick change strap system is deleted too.

yes the 339 is on my list (and i'm on their waiting list). guess i have to make another call to the boutique to make reservations for the 386. add to that another 2 Shanghai LE watches to be delivered by end 2010. let's hope Panerai give me some breathing space in between all these watches

That's more like it, looks and tech -wise. I wonder how light it will feel on the wrist (I like a bit of heft) and how ding-resistant the composite is?
