Rolex: how can you let go?

Last night I went to a professional meeting that's pretty regular and one of the hosts is a diver and I used to admire his trusty no date Sub that he always wore. Last night I noticed that he swapped the Sub for something else...IMHO, something much, much less attractive even though it was obviously a professional watch (not a brand I recognized).

Now, I don't know the story here and I didn't ask him... But maybe the Sub was stolen, maybe he sold it, or maybe he has multiple watches and he was giving it a break last night...not sure.

BUT...

Do you know of anyone who let go of their Rolex's in favor of other <lesser> watches for one reason or another?

I can't imagine doing so. As far as I'm concerned, I'm at the top, and I can't step down.

I suspect some have chosen not to wear Rolex during these challenging economic times.

You should have asked him where his Sub was and found out what happened. If he's a WIS, I'm sure it would have opened the door for a great conversation.

It might also have embarassed the wearer if he'd sold/'downgraded' due to financial hardship.

I've had to sell my Rolexes to raise fast/liquid cash before & although I now have two new pieces, I'm very selective about when I wear them so's not to appear extravagant in the current economic climate.

Well, to begin with I would never say Rolex is the top, maybe at marketing but definitely not in overall quality. There are way to many amazing brands out there, he may have been wearing a expensive watch but from a lesser known brand.

Overall, who cares, I own a few brands and I hope the guy next to me is not judging me when I am wearing my G Shock. Seriously, what kind of observation was that?

My guess is he has more than one watch and you just caught him without the Rolex.

Gotta disagree with you- I wear my Omega Speedy Moon in rotation, and while some would look at it as a "step down", I certainly don't. By that logic, going from my DD to my Sub is a step down. If you like wearing it, that's all that matters. Remember- it's JUST a watch!

I notice what watches people wear......

I can't help it I'm obsessed!!

(& no I don't judge a man by his watch..... but incidentally I wear a Seiko Monster 5 days out of 7 & that gets more compliments than either of my Rolex!)

Well, I just got back from another meeting with the same group and the no-date sub has returned!!! Complete with a new Oyster (non-diver) bracelet. Maybe he sent it in for service and was wearing the non-Rolex while he was waiting...
I knew he couldn't let go of his trusty 14060!!!

Sure I have about 40 watches in my collection, some are never worn. There are times when I wear a $200 watch instead of a Rolex. In face I wear an Omega speedmaster more.

My sister in law has a TT DJ that she almost never wears, just doesn't wear a watch at all.

I also have a close friend who has a 16610 Sub that he also never wears, opts for a Nike sport watch instead.

They both received theirs as gifts and say they don't like the reactions they get from wearing their Rolexes... which is kind of BS and probably just something in their heads.

Anyways, for my sister in law, I got her a watch winder for Christmas last year so at least its ready to wear when she is ready!

I was robbed the day before yesterday. They took my Navitimer and my Submariner. Insurance company will not reimburse. Although I am very grateful that my Daytona wasn't taken, I sold it the next day. Why? Because it's one thing to have a super watch you can wear on special occasions if you already have some other watches you can wear daily, but if the only watch you have left is one that you would only want to wear on special occasions, then what's the point? I'm not going to have it lying around at home to get stolen as well. I'll be buying one rugged watch (i.e. GMTII, etc.), wearing it everyday, and there'll be nothing sitting at home to get stolen anymore.
So there is another scenario where one might let go of their Rolex.

I did: Sold DSSD and bought a Charmex CX20,000 FT. A lesser brand, no but a very unknown brand, yes but a lesser watch, no way. Apart from the crown and resale of a Rolex, the CX 20K will rip the DSSD apart. It clobbers the DSSD in every category, spec wise. You asked so I am stating the facts as I see them and as the specs are. When I faced a watch so powerful that the only defense left for me was "DSSD has the resale value", then I knew it was time to let it go.

Also buying a non-Rolex is not stepping down. rolex is not the endall of all watches. The perception of how good Rolexes are, far exceeds technically how good they are.

When you see, feel and handle a watch that far exceeds a Rolex, based on your criteria, you will know right there and then which is the superior product. It will be very easy to let go of the Rolex then or vice versa.

Sure--lots of folks who own multiple Rolex will strap on a Seiko, Hamilton, or even a mickey mouse watch every now and then just for fun. Many on this forum are into collecting watches of all types, and if they're sitting in your watch case why not wear them now and then?

I, on the other hand, was unable to do it. I've had my 16610 Sub for four years now; just after I got it I also acquired a Marathon GSAR. The GSAR sat in a box for two years without being worn--so I sold it. Every time I looked at the Sub and GSAR side-by-side, I couldn't see the point in wearing the GSAR. (Of course, I'm one who will wear my Rolex watches for just about anything.)

Everybody has different preferences, and I find cheap watches quite fun personally.

Rolex isn't anywhere near the top, and that's the truth of it.
