A question of southern orientation

If the southern portion of the USA is considered south because it's closer to the equator, then what is the portion of Australia called that is closest to the Equator?

No...the southern portion of the United States is called the South because it is the southern portion of the United States. It really IS that simple.

As for Australia, I would venture to say it works the same way. I'm not sure the Equator itself is even a factor...

It's not the equator that is the measuring post, It is the South Pole.

No no no no.... it's all different in Australia.
You've often heard us say "Down Under" right?

Well, that means that, loosely, everything is opposite - to an extent.
Therefore, the north of the country that's just below the equator is the south. but north of the south pole is the south too. Then we've got the outback, don't even think of mentioning the outback

You're jumping the gun, Otis. April Fool's Day isn't until Sunday.

I saw an "Aussie Map" that had the globe turned until Australia was on the top of the globe and the rest of the world laid out accordingly. Very interesting.

Now that makes sense to me! We would then be considered up over, instead of down under right!

Us "up over's" use the outback word quite often! Example where are the kids honey, oh! they must be outback!
