Knock Cyclops Off?

Can this happen? I understand they are glued on in some way? Why aren't they cut out of the same piece of crystal?

I never heard of anyone accidentally knocking it off, but I and others have removed them [from sapphire crystals] on purpose.

Here's my Tudor after I took off the bubble >>>

What holds the crystal on? Why not carved out of one piece?

Look at the shape and finish of the cyclops. It would be/is impossible to cleanly cut and then polish this shape onto the sapphire crystal. You could not polish the rounded lens, as the rest of the crystal would prevent a full range of movement for the polishing equipment. Also you would have to start with a crystal at least twice as thick and then cut it back there would be a lot of waste material.

I have heard people taking it out with a chisel, never have seen one getting knocked out by accident.

So how is it attached? Acryllic? Glue?

I've never heard of a cyclops being accidentally knocked off, the intentional removal of the cyclops, if the desire is strong it can be done!!

There was a spate of this activity on another forum a while ago, apparently the cyclops is glued in place and can be removed with a sharp blow with a fine chisel.

I just didn't get it myself and never felt the urge to "alter" a watch, there's other models and brands that don't have a cyclops without having to do something that appears to me to be so drastic.

Besides, I need that magnification,lol

Quite simple cost its far easier to simply glue the cyclops magnifier to the watch crystal. And very difficult to make one all in one piece, never ever heard of one just falling off.

My wife reckons they should sink the magnification into the sapphire so it has flush surface, see what I have to put up with, lol

I didn't know the cyclops eye was a separate piece that was glued on.

Could you imagine placing a chisel next to your watch, let alone on it with force.

Agreed....wholeheartedly, Patrick. If someone came even close to my watch with a chisel, I'd have no option but to shove it up his ass!!

I took mine off with a razor-blade and a little bit of thumb pressure. It was not hard at all and no real tools are needed.

Yeah. That's gonna get some major responses from the folks around here, Mike!

Most of the recent posts are about which soft buffing cloth to carry with them when they go for a loaf of bread at the grocery store, or "Should I use Dove Soap or a hypo-allergenic mix of lanolin and aromatic herbs when I wash my 1,000ft-rated Rolex in the little plastic washtub I bought from Saks just for that purpose?"
