Another question about my "new" red sub. Trying to understand "hacking" here. Serial number is 2929XXX which I placed in 1969 or early '70. It's a 1575 movement, but it appears to have "hacking" in which the second hand stops when you pull the stem out to set it. Is this correct for a 1969 1680?

2.9 IS actually 70/71 and i'd go 71..... and contrary to popluar texts the hack was introudced on the 1680 at the back end of 70 and certainly all 71 (ok except maybe the odd throwback) had the hack..so no worries at all on yours.

BTW whats the datecode inside the caseback ?

A 2.9 mill serial number is most likely 1970. I don't know if a 1970 1680 should be a hacking movement or not, but my 1969 1680 is non-hacking.

A hacking 1575 is not unusual. I would put your watch closer to early 1972.

My DJ is a non hacking 1570 stamped Nov '71 "276****".

Great to know. As you note, several sites/sources like to throw the 1972 year as introduction of the hacking feature and i always thought that it was a bit earlier than that.

The watchmaker that opened the case for me and inspected the movement didn't tell me the date code-- being a newbie I didn't know to ask. Next time I go in I'll be sure to ask. (I don't have a caseback opening tool yet.) Thanks again for the quick answers- I'm learning a LOT here!

Watchmaker #2 said the date code in the caseback was III/70, so if hacking was introduced in late '70 it looks like it may correspond.
