A vintage Speedmaster Xmas treat
Look what I found whilst digging around in the wilds of Brisbane yesterday, this classic 1969 Speedmaster with the 861 movement. Incredibly, she is running and keeping excellent time but a little rough around the edges and needs a tidy up as well as new chrono pusher (not to mention ditching the Seiko band) but the movement is remarkably clean. This is the way I like to find them, tool box fresh, a great project piece, a great find
It came from the original owner who had owned it from new and there is great story that goes with it, which I will add at a later date if he is ok with it. Last edited by T5AUS; 18 December 2010 at 03:21 PM.. Reason: script |

Wow, that baby has been through the wars. Nice find. I take it you're going to restore it?

Good grief, that baby has seen some use. I'd be interested in hearing what you have planned for her.

Sure it will JB......... I will restore it very lightly, the glass I have already polished, the case is next and the chrono pusher is ordered. I am not sure about the bezel though, it's pretty rough but looks far worse on a macro photo than on the wrist so I might leave that for the moment. Not sure about the bracelet either, as far as I can ascertain when it was new there was the option of a leather strap or a bracelet. A leather strap here in the tropics is not very practical so I guess I will have to track down a genuine period Omega bracelet, the 1171 was the one issued on these (anyone have a spare one knocking around they dont want )

what?! You are not keeping it on that sweet Seiko band????
Actually, all kidding aside, I've been looking for a Seiko band like that for my Speedmaster - take a look: Yep, that's a 1982 Seiko 7A28 Speedmaster (on crappy leather which I'd like to replace) - you were expecting something else??

Nice pick up Phil, you have a knack for picking up these vintage beauties
Just one question: Are all Speedmasters 39mm? If anyone knows.

Thanks Steve HNY
I am pretty sure from what I have read on these that size has not changed from original although movements have. Perhaps someone who has more info will chime in. |

Did someone put something in the water down under? You, Phil, are literally the 4th Ozzy in the last 10 days who has been supremely nice to me. I was just telling my wife (even before your kind offer) how we need to move to Australia because everyone there is so pleasant, kind and generous!
PM sent Cheers! Happy New Year
