Icon20 A veteran needs a little attention! (1675 GMT)

Hello Friends!

I wish to share with you this interesting and nice piece.

It is not mine. Though I bought it brand new.
It belongs to my father in law, who is a very old man now, and has some delicate health problems lately.

A few days ago, my mother in law found this watch in a drawer.
It was needing a very good cleaning indeed, as it looked as if it had been inside a can with grease!

I was surprised, because it was one of my father in law favorite watch.

As a matter of fact, I bought this watch for my father in law, in 1983, during a vacation trip to the Caribbean, at an AD there, and presented it to him at our return.
He owns several nice watches, but he always seemed to like this one best.

I took the 1675, and gave a good cleaning, and gave some 20 turns of winding, and it started working perfectly.
Tried to polish its plastic "glass" with my usual treatment of poliwatch, but scratches are very deep.

Anyway, as I guess it was never serviced, and needing a glass replacement, I took to my watchmaker for a complete service, cleaning and oiling, asking him to replace glass (plastic) but not to touch the dial or hands.
I also asked him not to polish the case.

Now I´m waiting the return of the watch, which I will give again to my father in law to keep enjoying it.

Please note the natural fading of its bezel, with so many years of use.
I asked not to touch this bazel either, as I love its looks.

Hope you like the old watch as much as I do.

Best cordial regards, Abel.

I love it! I would love to find one in that condition one day, the bezel is great and the patina is perfect. I hope your father in law gets better Abel.

Abel,
Your plan to replace the crystal, have the movement serviced, and leaving everything else as is couldn't be better. I love that genuine, natural patina.
What a beauty and a nice gesture on your part, my friend.
Can't wait to see the results.

An amazing example my friend. A priceless heirloom that carries with it the memories and history that make it worth so much more than the sum of it's parts.

All my best to your Father in law.
