Rolex and the Workplace
Do you consider others at your place of work when wearing your rolex? Let me explain - I work for a large integrated energy company (think Exxon, Chevron, Shell, etc). I work in an oil refinery in a management level position - the vast majority of the work force are union represented employees and the balance are staff employees. My concern is wearing a Rolex and the impression it might leave on others in the workplace. Kinda like driving a BMW to work when the vast majority is driving a Ford.

I would say that unless you wore a diamond encrusted model nobody would ever even notice.....even an all gold model would only be recognised by a few, there are plenty of cheap gold coloured watches on the market after all and probably many more of them on wrists than DayDate's.....I've worn a Rolex for work since 1986......hardly anyone has ever commented.....and yes in more recent years I have worn a DayDate and the lack of comments stayed exactly the same.......don't worry about it, wear the watch for you.....not for spectators

as long as you're not flashing it in their face you shouldn't be conscience about wearing your rolex. As long as you're not wearing a Presidential with diamonds all over the dial.

What difference does it make what wristwatch you wear? I mean really. Most people don't even wear a watch, they use their mobile phones to tell time. The rest are not even interested in wristwatches. Believe it or not, the majority of people in the world don't even know what a Rolex is and wouldn't know one if they kicked it in the street. So the truth is I only consider one person when I choose my timepeice and that person is ME.
The only time I would consider not wearing a Rolex is during a job interview in the off chance that the interviewer might recognize it and look unfavorably at me as a candidate thinking, "If he has a Rolex, he must not need the job".

Funny how you put it. In my workplace I am the union employee own two Rolex watches and both my manager and director both wear plastic watches that looks like a timex. To answer your question yes I do consider people around me and often wear my watch under my cuff to attract less attention to it becuase ever since I started wearing Rolex about 3 years ago it does get noticed by people in my workplace and I feel like I have breasts on my wrist with how much people stare.

I could not care less and I agree that 99,99% of people don't even notice. Especially not against the tailor-made suit and shirt, the Hermes tie and the lezard shoes.........
Just once, I had an employee talk about us the Board Members as the Rolex brigade. I found that rather sweet.

I think it's a good question and of course only you can judge the likely reactions of people you work with. As noted above I can see how a model with diamonds and/or gold might stand out a bit too much in certain settings. Just like you might not wear expensive suits, French cuff shirts etc. in certain settings.
I think all steel Rolexes are pretty low profile though except to a small percentage of folks who take an interest in watches. |

Don't worry about wearing a Rolex to work. The watch was meant to be worn to tell time and date, first and foremost. Wear it with pride and on the down low and that should be fine.

Do think your employees are over paid when they tell you they are going fishing in their bass boat or camping in their RV? Whats the diff with wearing a Rolex.....all luxuries.
Dont be ashamed or worried what others may think of the fruits of your labor.

Agree with the others who say wear what you want and don't worry about those around you who likely have no idea what a Rolex looks like.

Unless you are the business owner claiming poverty during wage negotiations I do not see how it is relevant. I assume you earned your Rolex and its not a solid gold/diamond affair(inappropriate for the work environment you are in), you therefore deserve to enjoy it regardless of what others may or may not think. That said, it is always in poor taste/crass to "show it off" or "brag" on it.
As far as the union members having a problem with your Rolex, "rank has it privileges"! I am sure you worked hard to get into your position; you probably hold an undergraduate and most likely a graduate degree. If they want a Rolex let them save their $$ and get one as well or let them do the hard work to prepare/educate themselves to get into management like you did. Hell, I highly recommend BMW ownership as well! |

Others have speculated as to what Rolex you might wear, so I will just ask.
What model Rolex are you talking about wearing around your employees and staff? Are you already wearing this watch or do you plan to buy one?

Management level, large corporation, I think you should be fine as long as there is not any unnecessary bling. I work in a relatively large public agency and work with two employee unions, and frankly, I dont think anyone notices the brushed GMT-C I wear daily. I have always worn a Rolex (of some sort) throughout my 20 years in professional life and very few people notice.

For me it's the other way around I am used to seeing folks wearing minute repeaters and tourbullion timepieces at work so I guess I am the one wearing the Timex All good though. As other legends here have said enjoy what you have and don't stress too much... HAPPY NEW YEAR TRF FAMILY!!!

I have grappled with this myself. And.....
I never wear my Rolex when going to visit shop level employees and I never drive my BMW to appointments with any customers. Not all the business world is like this but in my business you don't want stand out like that. Most will never know it is a Rolex I am wearing. But if one person does ID it and makes a comment?? And others around get involved in conversation? I don't care what others say.... Plant workers......ESP the union guys will treat me different from that point forward. And I can't have that type relationship and be able to effectively wear the many hats I have to wear. I save my Rolex, BMW,etc for my personal enjoyment. When at work I concentrate in my job and don't need distractions. JMHO! |

I wear mine nearly every day, and I work in the oil field, literally, I don't work in an office setting. No one has ever noticed.

If you are in Asia, it is different. Everyone even the cleaning ladies would know you are wearing a Rolex from far. But I wear one anyways. Most days I wear my rose gold DJ, people would just comment its a nice watch or talk to you about watches.

Funny / true story from last week over the XMAS holiday.
Was sitting next to one of my brother-in-laws at dinner. I overhear him telling his Father that Rolexes cost over a $1,000. He does not like them because of the poor fit. He then points to my watch and says Rolexes do not fit as nicely as the watch I was wearing. He did not realize I was wearing a Pepsi / Rolex! Bottim line is, 99.9999% won't know or care what you have on your wrist. |

Could be a gift right?
I recently had a gaffone employee of the people I work for ask if my GMTIIc was real or was it a canal street special. I just kind of raised my eyebrows and asked what do you think? As he looked closer and said - it is real . . . . what are we paying you?! The guy I am working for gave the perfect response - NOT ENOUGH! You like the watch? Wear it. |
