Aboriginal Art

Australian Aboriginal Art has some very interesting styles and pieces.

I didn't until now own any.

As with most things it is important to get the authentic item with a certificate of authenticity and a photograph of the artist and their art.

As a piece of art each painting is unique and obviously hand painted.

As they say art is in the eye of the beholder. Some I really love and some.....well I'm not so sure.

So without further ado here is my piece (46x67cm):

AboriginalArt.jpg

The painting is called "Bush Medicine Leaves"
The painting represents particular leaves from a plant species, which contain medicinal properties. The women gather the leaves to use as bush medicine to treat a variety of ailments (sores, bites, boils). The leaves are boiled, kangaroo resin added and mixed into a paste and then applied.

AboriginalArt3.jpg

Once framed and hung is should look great.
Prices can vary a lot depending upon the size of the work, the artist and where you go to buy.

I think it's a well constructed piece Steve..congratulations. The artist looks, and should be, proud.

I like the painting. Now, about the 'medicinal properties' I would be interested in finding out why the medicine works. Have any studies been done?

Very nice piece, Steve. I'm sorry I didn't see any of that type of artwork when we were there. I'm sure I would have bought something.

Nice looking piece Steve......

There are some wonderful looking native paintings out there to be found!
The wife and I picked up an excellent one from the Darwin area last year.......

If you stare at the one you got long enough, it's almost psychedelic man.!

It'll look great framed...

Nice piece. Looks like one of the pictures that if you focus/concentrate long enough on something will come into focus.

The Kurrajong Bush Medicine Leaves are used to remedy the flu, headaches, backaches, upset stomachs, and chest pains.

I got this piece off ebay for less then $150 including postage.
Not bad considering the larger paintings can got for $000's through dealers.

The artist: Caroline Numina Panaka
Caroline is one of six sisters and three brothers. She attended primary school at Stirling Station, a cattle station near Tennant Creek. Later she went on to high school at Kormilda College in Darwin.
Caroline worked with the Community Development Education Program in Ti Tree for some time. She started painting professionally in 2000 after being handed down the Kurrujong Bush Medicine Dreaming by her aunties Gloria and Kathleen Petyarre, both established and well known Aboriginal artists. She is also related to the famous painter Margaret Scobie.
Caroline is an emerging artist who is now based in Darwin, with her sisters. Caroline travels back to her homelands regularly. She is married with six children.
Caroline's work is bought and sold around the world by institutions, galleries and art lovers.

Very nice looking piece. Do you use or have you tried the bush medicine to remedy aliments?

No I haven't tried the 'bush medicine' but I have used products with 'tea tree oil' which is good for mosquito bites.

Aboriginal culture has traditionally used the 'bush' in extraordinary ways.

I bet the bush medicine is used in extraordinary ways, just amazing at the wonders the world offers us.

I met my ex in Ecuador, and and I would be amazed on our subsequent travels back using plants native to the Andes for medicinal purposes
