Wearing your Rolex Through Airport Security

I tavel quite a bit for business and I just picked up my first Rolex. I'm wondering what other members do with their watch to get through airport security.

Are you able to wear your Rolex through the metal detector, or does it set off the alarm?

If you put it through the conveyor belt X-ray machine, do you put it in the small bin for wallets and spare change, or do you hide it in carry-on bag?

My biggest fear is being seperated from my watch by putting it through the X-ray machine conveyor belt, being sent to a secondary screening, and then some other passenger or TSA goon swipes it when I turn my back for a moment.

Here is a recent thread that addresses. http://www.rolexforums.com/showthrea...hlight=airport

I usually put my watch in my travel bag or computer case; quick unzip put in and zip. I do not consider it a problem.

I have forgotten and walked through the detector without setting the alarm. However, not all detectors are the same.

Many people have been wearing them through, some putting their arms in front of them or whatever but I do not like this as if the TSA agent wants they can make you take your watch off in front of everyone or if it goes off you have to take it off in front of everyone.

I take my watch off before I get into the security line and secure it in my carry on backpack or briefcase and then after I am through security, sitting at my gate I quietly get it out and put it back on my wrist. I have never had problems doing this and myself think its safer than taking it off when security makes a big deal in front of everyone...

If you are sent to secondary screening you can tell them you have important paperwork and things in your bag and you want to wait till they can bring that in with you and they will always respect that as once you told them you have important things there they are liable if something happens (somewhat liable that is)

In all seriousness, since my travel includes overseas as documented in the thread link above, I have developed a habit (good or bad) to just store my watch in a nice pouch, my pens, change/coins and other miscellaneous in the outer compartment of my carry-on luggage. I walk thru the metal detectors or body scanners with ZERO issues. I don't need the delay or hassle of getting pulled over for a wand check or worse a physical pat down. My constitutional rights are already infringed for the "better good" and don't need the delays. Yes, intelligence should be gathered before the bad guys show up at the airport. Sorry for the short rant.

My advice - Do what works for you and what you are comfortable with. To each his/her own.

It doesn't make sense that a metal detector would not go off for a SS watch?:thi nking:

How is that possible?

Good question. My sub didn't set off any alarms on any of my 8 flights during my honeymoon.

If you leave your watch on and it sets off the machine then everyone in line will be rolling their eyes and looking at you taking off an $8000 watch.

If TSA asks you to remove the watch, shoes, jacket, keys, beltbuckle, etc... in advance. What's the issue? FOLLOW THE RULES. No need for drama.

Mine never sets it off but I now just slip it in my pocket before walking through. In the past, I have had TSA agents tell me to remove it (and I'm not dumb enough to argue with them).

This is the sign of a seasoned traveler. You might be fine 19 out of 20 times, but "taking it off when security makes a big deal in front of everyone" is when your watch will get stolen.

It might be fine on domestic flights, but in airports around the world the rules are different. Don't take chances. Take off your watch BEFORE you get into the security line and slip it into a secure pocket in your carry-on.

Do exactly the same with your previous watch(es)...

No point pissing off the staffs at the airport IMO

Putting your watch in your backpack is a very good idea. One of my co-workers once put his directly in the bin and then when they all stacked up on the other side, the bin got knocked over. The sapphire crystal shattered when it hit the concrete floor. Ouch!

I just wear it and have never had a problem or been asked to remove it. As I am sure you could guess the guards could ask you to take it off to check out your watch if they wanted to.

Woah! I'd be seriously p'd off if that happened to me. Did the staff say anything to him, and was it insured??

Went through Security at the Airports at Samos(Greece),JFK,and Dalaman(Turkey) last year and my GMT didn't set any of the alarms off, but to be truthful i was very nervous about having to take it off if they asked me. In future i think i will store it wrapped up in my hand luggage or my wifes handbag.I just don't want anybody scratching it unduly.

Why take the chance? It only takes 5 seconds to put in a backpack or suitcase. I used to put it in my shoe and send it through the scanner until I was yelled at by the TSA. Apparently that's a no no.

I live in Colorado and fly out of Denver all the time. I always take my watch off but forgot my belt one day. Surprisingly my belt which has less metal than my Sub set off the machine. In the end, some have success and some don't but I still prefer to take it off to eliminate any hassle.
