As some of you may well know I am obsessed with patina and faded bezel inserts..lol

Lets begin with a WIKI quote you can find under "Patina" value:

"Apart from the aesthetic appearance and practical protection of patination, antique experts confirm that an object's value increases when its patination is intact because it is an important effect of the aging process and this evidential history is reflected in the value of the piece"

I am curious to see what shade of patina you guys prefer on your plots and hands and if you can post a pic of an example that best describes your taste, please do. It does not have to be a pic of one you own. Here is what I consider a perfect even and beautiful shade and according to Mark Lerman's "Everything Red Sub reference" its a golden yellow or creamy #3

Is that original? My lume plots look nothing like that (talking shape and thickness rather than colour).

Wow, that's a beautiful watch David. That amount of patina or slightly less is what I would prefer. Here's my 1680, which I chose in large part for it's level of patina . . .

I'd tend to prefer the off white/eggshell. Evenness is the big thing for me.

Thanks Clay. I like your eggshell/off-white too. Honestly, I like all patina, at least until it gets really dark and/or funky. Using Mark L's scale, anything in the 1-4 range works for me. In addition, it's nice to have patina variety from watch to watch as this keeps things fresh.

Rex that is a great example, I like the eggshell color as well especially on Clays great white but something about that Custard color just draws me in. Just to clarify I do not own the watch in the photo, in fact I don't even own a watch with patina because I have yet to find a 1680 red or DRSD with that custard color :(

Thanks David. We need to find you a nice example! Are you having trouble locating a watch with the patina you want? I know you've been looking for a little bit now.

When the patina's darker than the bezel insert, it reminds me of blonde girls with dark tans ;)

Yeah I have been bouncing back and forth between a 1680 red and DRSD, the DRSD is barely in my reach financially and I would have to get a MKIV with no papers or I could get a meters first with papers. I'm being picky as I really want one with the custard patina, perfect dial and hands, and unpolished case but I am willing to wait. I have Andrew looking for one for me now so hopefully soon I will join the patina club!

Take your time.... it will come... it's great how patient you're being man... the last thing you want to do is grab one on a whim.

I agree that you're being smart taking your time and holding out for your watch. Although I always suggest going slow, I don't always follow that advice myself. So hard to wait!

Good luck with the search. You'll find the right one sooner or later and it will have been worth the wait.

I am with you guys. David that patina on the Sub is amazing. I have seen some where the lume was coffee colored...that may be a bit much for me. I bought my DRSD because I loved the lume. I am also quite partial to the lume on my 1655. I have found that by taking the picture in different lighting, I can make the lume appear almost white. Seeing Clay's 1665 made me consider putting a chalk white dial on my 16610, but I put a faded bezel insert on it for the right look. It was raining today here so I got the models out for a photo shoot. Enjoy your evening.

I like the richness of your cafe au lait patina as well. My favorite part of the day is having my coffee and flavored creamer Come to think of it, I prefer my coffee and my patina to be the same color. Needless to say I don't drink my coffee black. Ha ha.
