I believe Rolex starting using serial numbers that begin with letters starting in 1987.

Can someone please confirm?

I agree...checking the Rolex Reference Library 1987 is listed by Tools as the first year where Rolex used letters in their serial numbers!!!

The new Random letters/numbers started end of 2010 but still some V,G pus a few other letters have been reported into 2011.Its only a appoximation when a case was stamped and not necessarily when a completed watch was shipped from factory to AD for sale.

It's not easy to pin down when any particular model started... with the millions sold, nobody can come forward and say "I have the first one produced"

As Padi said, V,G, and Randoms all are being produced right now, but there were M serials on display at Basel last year. From that one must assume that there are also M serial ceramics that were released too...
