PO Decision help
I recently sold my GMT2C and have been looking around for a replacement. In the past I had a 42mm PO and gave it to a business partner. Yesterday I found out it was stolen out of his truck about a year ago. I loved the watch, but found that I liked the oyster bracelet of the Rolex much more to my liking.
But I am torn. In my search for a replacement I find myself returning over and over again to the Planet Ocean. I miss the lume. The lume on the GMT2 was great for about 5 minutes - the PO like a torch for a lot longer. And I love the versatility of the rubber and I just recently just started doing searches on the mesh - and I love the retro look! Plus the AR and the matte dial - 9 out of 10 times when I looked at the PO I didn't even know what time it was! So here is my dilemma - I have had larger watches (i.e. Panerai and a couple no name 47mm pilot watches) and while I do like them now and again it kinda drives me nuts having to stuff them under sleeves - especially in the winter (I am in Western New York) when I am wearing 3-4 long sleeves. I like the 42.5mm PO, but have an opportunity to grab a 45.5. Will the 45.5 keep me from wanting to wear smaller watches like a DJ or something even in the 38-40mm range? Have those that chose the 45.5mm given up on their "smaller" sized watches? I love versatility of the PO over the Rolexes I have had - especially, like I mentioned earlier with the strap options (Rolexes look perfect as they were designed and horrible on aftermarket straps IMHO). Will a 45.5 forever keep me away from the classics? Should I stick with something that isn't so much of a difference (42.5). For reference, I am not that big of a guy - my wrists (I think) are around 7" and I am only about 5'8" in heels. But I used to get tons of compliments on the Panerais and the like. Any help from anyone who has been faced with a similar dilemma would help. Rob |

Not sure if I'll be of much help, but I'm also looking to pick up a Planet Ocean, and went today to an Omega boutique shop to try on the 42mm and 45mm versions. Hands down, the larger watch looks STUNNING on my wrists! I don't have any hesitation in getting the larger size. However, my wrist is 7 3/4", so I don't know if my situation helps you decide or not. I'd say, if you can get to a dealer and try both sizes on, and if the XL size looks right on your wrist, go with it! Wish I could be of more help! Good luck! |

My Thoughts
I was faced with the same situation just a couple of months ago. I also went to the Omega Boutique like "Shel" and tried on both the 42 & 45 version of the PO. One on each wrist at the same time. I decided to go with the 42mm because the end of the lugs on the 45mm came out to the edge of my 7" wrist. This just seemed too big for my wrist. It was as if my entire wrist was a watch. The 42 looks more natural on my 7" wrist. Even the 42mm is kind of big under some of my long sleeve shirts, so I think the 45 would be really large under my shirts.

I think the 45mm PO is large for the majority of wrists and its also quite a heavy lump of steel - something to consider. When I tried on both sizes, I too was caught up in the bigger is better mindset. In hindsight, the 42 for me is the better size - and I was fairly close to regretting getting the 45 mm version I think.

Although I fell in love with the Planet Ocean when it was introduced in 2005, I could never decide which size and which model. My wrist is 7 1/2 inches but round and not flat. The 45.5 would fit but would slip from side to side.
My dilemma was solved when I swapped for a Liquidmetal last May. I find the 42 to be perfect for my wrist. And the look isn't bad either. It's not just the circumference of the wrist that matter, it's also the shape, round or flat. Fr. John† |

7.25" wrist and prefer the 42mm over 45.5mm.
I felt like wearing a clock with a 45.5mm. |

7.75" wrist & currently saving for the 45.5.
Not to hijack the thread but how big's your new Pan Eric mate? Do you find it wears smaller than the PO?

it wears smaller probably because it is not as tall/thick as the 45.5mm PO but def. wider than the 42mm PO |

Very helpful thread. I have a Speedy Pro thats at a 42 and am in the market for a PO. I believed that the 42 would be the right one and I think this has helped me make the decision on which size to get.
Thanks |

So depth rather than width is the important factor in your opinion then Eric???

Maybe 42 mm is a great "compromise"
I wear watches from 39 to 44 mm for various occasions. But if you told me I could only have one watch (ouch) to wear to all occasions (double-ouch) I'd pick my 42 mm PO to be that watch. It's a great piece, the weight and heft are wonderful and the size is "just right" for my medium size wrist and medium size frame. Just my two cents.

My big PO makes my Sub look like a mid size watch. The PO seems more up to date in the SS diving watch world IMO. Go for the PO. I would go Rolex with gold or platinum.
My 7" wrist and PO. The 42mm PO wears smaller than my 40mm Sub. I had the opportunity to have both sizes of PO for the day. The 45mm was a no brainier. It spreads its size out better. The 42mm felt top heavy in comparison. |

I recently purchased the 45.5mm. I too went back and forth on choosing between the two sizes. I felt the 42 wore small, so I opted for the 45.5.
When I went to my AD, I was wearing my 42mm Breitling Superocean, and the 42mm PO just seemed a lot smaller. |

Aaahhhhhh!!!!!!
So many conflicting posts!!!
I did go to the AD last week and tried them both on. The 42 fit me better. I too have a flat wrist that can handle large watches - 44 Panerai, 47mm pilots - but the 42 seemed to fit better to me. And my girlfriend seemed to think so too. I wish it had a 22mm strap instead of 20, but oh well. The 45 kinda fell a little too far over my wrist. I wouldn't want the PO to keep me from going back to a DateJust in the future - and I think the 45 would be the point of no return. I am glad I tried them both on - the AD still has them. They told me they are having a sale next week and they are going to hang on to both sizes until the sale - when I can make my final decision. I really appreciate all of the replies, including the side-by-side photo comparisons. It isn't making it any easier - but it is making me want the PO more than ever. Thanks for all the replies. I will be back in a couple weeks with some photos!! Cheers, Rob |

Great side-by sides!!
Not making it any easier! Thanks for posting - especially with the Sub. I have a TT Sub - but it has been commandeered by my girlfriend - looks better on her than it ever did on me. Rob |

Me and a GMT2
For reference sake:
I think I am suited for a 42. This 40 fit well. Sadly lacking AR in the last photo above - one of the things I love about the PO Rob |

This is something you are going to have to find a dealer and try both on. I did three weeks ago, and I am ordering my 45.5 tomorrow.
I knew I wanted something larger than the 40mm watch I've been wearing, but never thought that a 45.5 would work for me, until I tried it on. It felt right. not overwhelming. I have a 7.75 inch wrist btw.

Knowing that Omega has been limiting supply of Planet Oceans and with the price increase coming March 1st, I spoke with my dealer yesterday about his inventory. As usual, he says not to worry. His inventory is still strong and his discounts continue.
He will continue to sell his current inventory at current prices even after the increase. With the new PO coming after Basel, now may be the time to pull the trigger on the classic Planet Ocean. It's a great watch whether you go 42mm or 45.5. Fr. John† |
