Before I purchased my 18k YG 18238 DD, I made a thorough comparison with Patek's Calatrava (the price almost the same)...But then I discussed this comparison with my friends and my family (including my wife). Most of them advised me to buy the DD...If you buy a Rolex, it's just like buying something expensive but has a better re-sale value...Years from now the value of a Rolex DD will be much better than the value of a Patek's Calatrava...
Regards,

I'd buy the Rolex Platinum DD.
By the way: I tried it on at my AD's just a few days ago. FANTASTIC feel and WEIGHT, that watch has. I was also told that the "Ice Blue" dial on the Plat is ONLY delivered and issued on the Plat.

The Platinum DayDate with glacier blue dial.
I've never been a fan of day, date, month subdials, they remind me too much of the cheapest of the Daytona fakes.

You probably can guess my answer from my own decision.
Every watch collection needs equal numbers of Rolexes and Pateks. I absolutely love my new Patek acquisition. And I know you will also. Go for the Patek (without question). The decision is like, "Should I buy the Mercedes S-class or the Bentley Flying Spur?" |

I'd probably go with the DD, owning one bottom of the barrel patak does not intrigue me too much and the PP I wanted is way out of my league.

I'd get the new platinum DD with the blue numerals and the ice blue waves dial.
I want the watch to wear it and give me joy, not just to look at it, so I would never buy a PP. |

How can a watch be judged for addition to one's collection?
- NAME AND REPUTATION? - WATCH COMPLICATION? - OVERALL COLLECTABILITY? - PRICE? Three of the four criteria above are good reasons to buy the Patek. The Patek blows the doors off the Rolex decision with all criteria in mind. LAST WORD: "I wear my "sport" PP with blue jeans, sweat shirt, and running shoes. I bought the watch. It's mine to wear. I can wear it "When," "Where," and "How" I want. I was in the fashion industry and I learned quickly that the first rule of fashion is "there are no rules." C'mon people. "Get your sticks out of the mud." Last edited by estatehomes; 2 May 2007 at 09:37 PM.. Reason: typo |

Hello Steve I'm making the same decision, whether a Plat DD or PP 5146P (platinum). I have a YG DD and that's great, but after trying on the PP, no contest. It's great to have a beautiful timepiece that just looks an ordinary watch. The ultimate wolf in sheeps clothing! Go for the PP. Quote:
The PP 5146 is one of the most complicated watches out there! Much more complicated than ANY current Rolex. You can buy a $200 Seiko that has a day-date function! For what it does, the Rolex DD is very overpriced. The 5146 is so sophisticated that the date DOES NOT need to be changed for any month (not even February) unless it's a leap year. The watch calculates the day, date, month and moon phase. Compared to a $30k-50k Rolex that needs to be adjusted 6 times per year. John. |

Hard to say as both watches are totally different in style.
The Patek has a leather band and the Platinum is a metal band. I don't know how much that Patek is, but I'd think a better comparison of styles would be the Rolex Platinum against a Patek Nautica, although I hear that these usually go for $60,000 US! |

Patek....for me. It's understated, sophisticated, elegant.
Rolex DD....is pure bling-bling, decorated exterior.

And above all Rolex is something recognized by almost evryone. I will definitely go with Rolex Plat. DD with Glacier Blue Dial as the dial itself says that its a platinum watch n not SS as its unique for Platinum models only.
