30 years.
I think it looks great. Signs of a well lived life. Not mine, but I'm on my way. There's no polish from the RSC in my future. I picked up my SD to be a daily wear piece for 30+ years. There was a long list of storied contenders, but the one that could take a beating and still look great in 30 years time was clear.

That's one of the reasons I got rid of the deepsea. I didn't want to put scratches on it. I feel better buying a Casio G-Shock.

I like Rolex sports watches because you CAN knock them about a bit. But each to there own and good on you for not keeping your DS as a "dress" watch!

Once you brake the "no scratches" mentality your Rolex truly becomes part of you. It took me 2 years to break that with my SD but now when it gets all sweat-dirty and a new scratch pops out the damn thing looks even more mine. When I work on my bycicles wearing it it gets pretty much hammered and seems is loving it. Every time I hear a "bang" on it I told him " take that and shut up,you son of a bi..". Belive it or not I've started using it to look at the time too . Trust me it bothers me a lot more if one of my Gshocks gets badly banged, but hey, more power to you |

i work in the oilfeild and i can say with complete confidence i have the best watch on location, my boss brought his wife to work so she could see me wearing my rolly in the feild, his mavado didnt seem as special after watching my watch glint in the sun as i swung a 10 lb sledge hammer, scratches will happen but you dont get to enjoy these things in the box, i plan on buying an explorer or a submariner in ss only, i admit im worried about stretching the original 18k band, but the first day with my watch on and it still felt strange on my wrist, like having my arm up a unicorns backside lol i got out of my truck and hit my wall with it and heard a heartbreaking scrape, it was my first scratch on it... i breathed deep and said to myself, its yours forever, dont worry about the scratches, who would want to sell THIS watch, this is MINE, and it felt almost as if i had marked my territory, since then i rarely take it off

Just think of nicks/scratches and eventual bezel/dial fading over time as adding valuable patina and character to your watch, which only the original owner can do. Otherwise, its just someone else's neglect and abuse.

I wear my Sub 24/7 so its got its share of scratches. The 12 oclock side of the bracelet especially. I've managed to keep the 6 oclock side and the case fairly clean. If I'm going to do what could potentionally be watch scratching activity, then I put on my old Seiko Diver.

Yep, the pic has been around the internet for a while and rumour has it that it survived a motorcycle crash (sort of)

I bet he needed more than a band aid just as the watch might need a bit more than Cape Cod!

Any idea where that busted up Seadweller came from?
The reason I ask, is that a few years ago, a group of 20 of us set out from London to attend World Ducati Week in Italy. My best friend, riding his 999R about 50 yards in front of me was knocked off his bike at around 140mph (yes miles per hour, not kmh). We were just outside Milan on the A1 Autostrada. He survived with just a broken wrist - Dainese leathers and a Shoei lid saved his life. I managed to stop three lanes of traffic and bring him and his wrecked bike from the central reservation to the shoulder. His Seadweller was no longer on his wrist and could not be found. He has since replaced both watch and bike with identical models.
This is a 100% true story! Grahame. |

I'm 100% scratch free. Feels so good. Sadly I know my bubble will be busted some day soon.

The watch might well have saved his hand and knuckles from serious damage with that. I'd say he's quite lucky.
