rolex cost then and now

in this ad, a new daytona cost $210 in 1965. according to this inflation calculator, that would be $1,475.39 today.

i don't know about you, but i'd rush to my AD tomorrow morning to pick up a new daytona for fifteen hundred bucks!

but then again, televisions and jet travel are much cheaper...

Omega was the premium watch back then, though.

Not at all.

I can only remember back until 1963 and Rolex was always the stronger (read expensive) brand.

Wages and all other expenses were somewhat proportional to the price of the watch, id say.

Agree, if I remember correctly I paid 3-4 months of salary for my first Rolex.

I picked up one of these Way Back Machines a few years ago. Perhaps now is the time to put this bad boy to good use. If you like, you ladies and gents can draw straws to see who goes back with me to buy a cheap watch.

Note: the dog's a great conversationalist and, yes, he will be coming along on the trip.

Would it be that sought after if its priced at $1500 today?

I paid around $985.00 for my 6365 in 1985. When I sold it around '93 I got like $4K for it. Thought I had cleaned up. At least it didn't have an exotic dial(PN)

There was an ad from someone's post a couple weeks ago which had the price of a gold GMT in 1968 at $1100. Stainless Steel was $245.

Depends on the dial and condition I think. But I'm guessing at least US$30k?

What does that tell you, I bought my SubC brand new directly when released (V serial) I gues it will prove to be a nice investment in 20years!

My wife was digging around in old paperwork and she came up with a receipt dated July 3rd 1984 for a Rolex precision air king for $740.00. If memory serves me I sold that watch for $1000.00 in 1998 ,1999 and it was beat to crap.

What's boggles my mind too is how much the MSRP of the Explorer II has risen in just the past ten years. In 2001 when I received mines, it was at $3,425 USD if I can recall. Now, just 10 years later, its $6,325 USD, almost doubled in just 10 years time.

Considering inflation and cost of living, I can't even begin to imagine how much it would cost 10 years from now.

Well in the early 1980s a 6263 Daytona was Ł882 while the GMT11 was Ł998 and the Sub Ł1012.At this time the Daytona was a very very poor seller as not many wanted manual wind watches. My Father at this time saved hard for many many years to buy a Sub.But when he got to the AD they offered him a Daytona with a good discount. And as money was tight he bought the Daytona, and with the money he saved,he bought my Mother a new washing machine. The Daytona now belongs to me,and while I am still breathing it will remain with me, as a reminder of a great guy my Dad.

doesn't the inflation calculator factor that in? $210 in 1965 has the purchasing power of roughly $1,500 today.

even more amazing, perhaps, is property prices, though. i remember in an early episode of Mad Men, pete, one of the account guys, is talking about buying an apartment on the upper west side for something like $35k!

I purchased my first, a rootbeer, in 1973. Bought it through the PX system and had a choice of a Sub or the tt GMT for $220. On the non-PX market they were both selling for $440, I believe. The rootbeer was on a leather strap, though.

I paid $564 USD for my DRSD at Bucherer's in Geneva (still have the receipt) in 1978. It also has somewhat appreciated in value.

a ford mustang in 1965 cost around $2,000.00 so the watch cost about 10% the price of the car

so, if a mustang costs $30k today, then a daytona should cost $3k!

That's what the inflation calculation does.

The point is Rolex prices have escalated much faster than inflation, but anyone who has watched their frequent price increases knows that!
