Hello, from Texas
Hello everyone!
I will be acquiring a Rolex Datejust (Oyster Perpetual) from my mother as a graduation present next week. It is two tone 18k gold. I've always been excited about it and knowing that it would be mine at graduation has certainly added to my motivation throughout the past few years. I know very little about the world of fine watches (including Rolex) but am quite excited by the prospect of learning more. After reading though several of the threads here at this forum, I am certain that this site will be a wonderful asset in my quest to gain more knowledge about this watch. On the flip side, the content here will probably convince me to buy several other Rolex watches as I begin my career (a scary idea given the investment). The watch I will be receiving was owned by my grandfather and rarely worn. After his death, my grandmother locked it up in the safe and it has been there since (about 10 years). It is currently at an authorized Rolex dealer getting cleaned and prepped. Interesting story: My other grandfather (my father's dad) has the exact same watch that was given to him as a gift during his youth. At the time, he was working for Dallas Police Department as a patrol officer. One Christmas Eve he and a few of other officers responded to a call about a squatter in a penthouse apartment owned by the (then) owner of the original (and only) Six Flags theme park. After taking care of the problem and arresting the squatter, a gift awaited my grandfather and the two other patrol officers when they returned to work. Brand new Rolex watches. Being the average patrol officer, neither of them new what a Rolex was but thought it would be nice to own Bulova Accutrons. My grandfather was elected by the group to take the watches to the jeweler they were purchased from to ask about the possibility of trading them for the Bulovas they coveted. He asked the dealer how much extra they would need to pay after the trade-in. The gentlemen kindly smiled, offered him a cup of coffee and asked if he would mind reading a bit of literature regarding the Rolex watches they had just received. My grandfather agreed and took a few minutes to read about their new gifts. After learning some basics and being overly impressed by the quality of the watches, he asked about the price. Needless to say, my grandfather returned to the police station with all three watches and explained what he had learned to the other two recipients. They all kept their Rolexes. My grandfather has worn his Rolex Datejust every day of his life since he first received it. Whether he was working in the yard, out on patrol at work, investigating crime scenes, arresting Lee Harvey Oswald after his accused assassination of JFK, or completing any other task, his Rolex Datejust remained on his wrist. He still wears it today and the watch (accompanied by this story) will prove to be an amazing heirloom that will surely be passed along for generations. -Vince |
