SD 16600 or Submariner 5513
Ladies and Gents,
I have been bitten by the vintage bug and have a scenario I would like to run by you: Should I sell my Sea Dweller (Z Serial, complete mint package) for a gorgeous Submariner 5513 in mint condition, all original (no papers, etc)? This sub has me drooling but the SD was my 1st and favorite Rolex (but I've never seen a Sub like this one). Here's my current collection: SD GMT Master II 16710 GMT Master 1675 Air King 5500 IWC Small Portuguese 3531 I realize that I should sell the 16710 first as it's so similar to the 1675 but it's not moving on the sales forums. I figure the SD would sell quicker and I'm not in the position to add another watch without selling one first. Prices: I figure the SD would sell somewhere in the low to mid 5s and the Sub is about 6K. Being left w/o a modern Rolex: If I made this deal I would be left with a vintage Air King, GMT and Sub + my dress watch (the IWC) as I would eventually sell the 16710. Would you mind being left w/o a modern Rolex? As always, I understand that I have to make the final decision. I'm just looking for some guidance, imput and thoughts. Thanks! |

While I do appreciate vintage, would it not become harder to find parts and maintain a 5513 in the years to come? It must have been introduced more than 50 years ago. Personally I woundn't like to just own vintage for practical reasons. I would stick with the Sea Dweller, that is an awesome watch

Hi Ross,
I understand your situation. Personally, I am not into vintage, actually I go always for the latest models. But there is one exception: My 16600 Sea-Dweller. Never ever will I sell this watch. If I were in your situation, I would sell the IWC, but I understand that IWC's are hard to sell on the second hand market.... And if you like vintage, where is the problem being left without a "modern" Rolex? You always could buy one if you wanted one..... And: Yes, the 5513 is a classic beauty, too! Good luck with your decision, just follow your heart.... Tom |

Wait until the 16710 is sold. Patience is a virtue.
YouŽll just end up wanting the SD again. Plenty of spareparts for the 5513. They produced the watch for decades, plenty of parts available, used and new. |

I happen to own a Y series 16600 Sea Dweller and a 1977 1665 (Not a 5513 but it's the same idea).....I think the 5513 is an amazing watch, but then again so is the 16600.....
If the 5513 is really mint, then I would go with that..... You can always pick up another 16600.....They are not a rare as people seem to make them out to be...... |
