Aloha to All! Some questions from a Newbie

I've enjoyed prowling the forum for the past couple of weeks and I figured it was time to jump in. I have a SS/Plat YM I picked up in Switzerland and am looking for my second Rolex.

I'm thinking of:

1) a Sub no date due to the clean lines and symmetrical dial;

2) a JJ special TT Sub but I have no experience with gold. How easy does it scratch and can you buff out the scratches at home? and

3) GMT II (older model) due to versatility with bezel changes. How hard is it to change the bezel? Does it cause any wear to the watch when you change it out? How difficult is it to find a second bezel? Does it come stock in black or in any of the colors (Pepsi, B/R)?

Of the watches listed, I would go GMT Pepsi, my understanding is that they will not be making them anymore, just the new ceramic GMT. Pick one up now and hold onto it.

Well first welcome to TRF Ronnie now all your choices are fine watches.The Sub non date is a Rolex classic,and now a 14060 from the very early 90s a good buy.But pref with the tritium dial I believe will be very collectable in future.But the Sub 14060m is a very fine watch,too,now the TT blue sub a fine watch,but afraid the polished gold can become a scratch magnet.Now to the GMT a very versatile watch,with four bezel insets if you count the root beer.Plain black/red-black/pepsi/or brown root beer found on the TT.Now to change bezel there is a fine tutorial if you search in-forum,if you take your time its quite easy to do.But after a few times practise very easy,the inserts cost around $60-$70 each.So have the main three inserts then 3 different watches for the price of one.But try them all on the one you like most thats the one for you

I'd lean toward the GMT II for a totally different look (4 different looks, actually) from the YachtMaster.

Hello Ronnie.....You cant go wrong with the no date sub !!!! A beautiful watch that will still be a beautiful watch in 50 years time I am as happy as a sandboy with mine.
Of the other two, I have never worn the TT blue sub, but it does get a lot of praise.....I suppose it depends what you want to wear it for. I would imagine that the SS sub and red hand GMT II would be more robust if you are wearing it for sport/work.
Red hand is my next purchase in the next 6 months or so, so please dont buy the last one left

Wecome to TRF. I won't try to hide my choice. GMT II all the way. Although I'd like any you listed. That's the best part about Rolex. Many classics to choose from.

I'm partial to the GMT because I owned the older model, black bezel. Red is my favorite color and I really miss the red 4th hand on my SS/Sub. My son has it now and wants the pepsi bezel. With all due respect to the guys that change their own, I would'nt do it unless I had a bezel puller that exerted pressure evenly around the circumference of the bezel. I'm pretty sure my AD would change mine for me any time I wanted for free. Good hunting!

Hi, Ronnie and welcome to TRF. All three of your choices are great watches and I've owned two of the three ( Submariner and GMT II) The GMT just happens to be the one for me because of the looks and of course the bezel options. I don't change the bezel often, but I don't think it causes too much wear as long as you don't do it too often. With some perseverance, you can come by all three bezels.

You have a tough decision. The Submariner is just a pure classic, one that I have owned three different time and I'll probably have again the GMT is a classic too and so useful with the 24hr hand. The TT Sub is just a beauty and definitely a watch that can be worn for all occasions. It's all going to come down to which one you love looking at the most. Good luck and keep us posted

If it's scratches you are worried about, I'd buy the SS SUB-date 16610 in the blink of an eye. Still the best of the best out there.....with a good resale value.

If you like the clean look, the sub no date will be a good choice. However, make sure that you won't miss the date feature.

I myself require the date feature.

The Sub no date is a classic but I had one briefly and traded up for the Sea Dweller becasue I cannot get by without the date function for work.

The GMT II is a beaut, and here's what I like:

1. Has a nice sized dial, with the second time zone that comes in very handy;
2. Has a nice splash of colour with the Pepsi bezel that not only has a rich history and smart style, but which offers a quick visual cue to day/night of the second time zone (red is day, blue is night....);
3. Low profile and light on the wrist;
4. Bezel can be changed to change the look of the watch, and the bezel rotates both directions, and can be used as a crude timer as well as tracking other time zones.

Why not go for the completely different look of the TT blue sub.

I would either go TT Sub or GMT II, mainly because I like having a date. Just my taste is all.

Welcome to TFR. I have the TT and GMT. Both great watches. TT will get scratches but is still a very tuff watch. Out of the 3 choices, which one jumps out at you? Try them all on if you haven't already...one will speak to you. Happy hunting and post pics when you purchase.

Well, with all the input I've decided on the TT Sub and the GMT II. I'll be trolling the classifieds until something comes out. I think the GMT will be my daily watch due to weight and SS bracelet. The YM will be used on weekends and the TT for special occasions where the bling won't be out of place.

The B/R bezel is what I'll be looking for. Is it me or does the red half kind of look black depending on the degree of light? I've seen photos where this seems to be the case. If so, that would make it even nicer IMHO.
