Is it really worth buying pre-loved..........

if the price difference is $500 or less? I bought a BNIB random serial 16610 last year for $5.5k and now I'm

seeing Mint 16610 V serial selling for $5.8k. I also purchased a pre-loved D serial 16710 (Pepsi) a year ago and

now I see the same watch selling for $300-400 more. The new 42mm ExpII is currently priced @ $7750. Do you see

this watch selling for less than it's current price 3-4years from now? A lot of people are saying to buy pre-loved but

I believe BNIB is the way to go unless you are buying an old/beat up Rolex that is ridiculously under priced.

Let me hear your thoughts, gentlemen!

For me, I always buy BNIB.
For some people that is not an option.
I am buying these to wear until I pass it down to my son.
I prefer to be the sole owner

Considering the $700 to $1,000 price to service a used watch, it makes more sense to buy brand new.

Well it depends. There are definitely deals to be had especially if you buy LNIB from the trusted sellers on here. I bought my Explorer II that was worn only a few times for a substantial savings. When it was all said and done I saved over $1800 when you include tax. I also saved about $1200 or maybe a little more when you include the tax savings on my SubC that was also only worn a couple of times. Both watches were only a couple weeks old.

If it's only a difference of $500 or less, then no, it's not worth it, because that won't even cover the service cost should it require one. Now if it's 3-4k less than NIB, like what you see frequently from our trusted sellers here, then hell yeah it's worth it!

I never absorb depreciation...I let someone else do it. The only way I would buy BNIB is if the deal were too good to be true, which it rarely is.

Unfortunately, for us Curmudgeons..............

Rolex is not making our models anymore, so yes it is worth it to buy Pre-loved since the ceramic has reared its ugly head.

Down with bloated lugs and ceramic!

Do you guys think we can realistically expect to see a discount on the "curmudgeon approved 42mm EXPII"

a couple of months-years from now?

I have 4 watches purchased brand new from AD and one bought here on TRF with very late serial number. Servicing costs can quickly eat into savings. YMMV.

Also, maybe we are just looking at different deals??? I have bought quite a number of pre-owned Rolex watches. None have been anywhere close to a $500 savings.

My 16700 ran me at ~$3,100 shipped -- having a fresh service less than a year ago. I dunno.........I think I did better than new from an AD.

This curmudgeon, for one, certainly does NOT approve of it being 42mm!

I always buy new, just the way I am. But it seems to make sense to buy LNIB.

This is kind of the way I look at it. To me it's a good feeling to know that your watch is still worth what you paid for it, unlike BNIB... and if you buy from a trusted seller, you still have that peace of mind feeling.

I only currently own one Rolex but I have the same point of view. My first was BNIB and my next will be BNIB as well.

Depends. For a $500 difference, no. The reason for the increase in pre-loved prices is that the BNIB prices have gone up signifantly this year. The gap is still about the same.

In some cases I would say yes ,take the sub for example, a sub-c from a AD will run you about 8k and if you compare it to the old style 16610 you can probably get one for around 5k.

That's a drastic difference and. I would do it if I had to absolutely had to own one.

Well I had spoken to a somewhat friendly AD a few days before the hike about a deal on a Sub-C, he was unable to do anything for me, it would have been full retail plus tax. I lucked out and discovered a trusted seller here who is semi local had a BNIB C, so I saved $500 off the pre-hike retail, plus 3 days later, the hike made my BNIB C another $700 cheaper.

And, the Sub is clearly BNIB. Bought from a FL AD, 3 weeks ago, stamped, named, dated, all plastic in place.

If I bought it from my AD today, I'd pay about $1700 more (with tax). And that's why if I ever sell, I shouldn't lose a cent. Reminds me of the thread asking the question: "are submariners free to wear?". :)

Well for $500 I would say no... HOWEVER I think you can do MUCH better than $500 here from some of the trusted sellers I have NEVER saved a minimal $500, in fact in the last week I have purchased a PEPSI, SD 16600 and a White Face Daytona... Could not have gotten any of these from my AD let alone save $$$ on them

I for one am very happy with the TRF sellers I have dealt with and will continue to do business with them... Just depends on the situation I guess but it is so easy to just wire some cash and have a new watch the next day without having to leave your home/office IMO... Now find be an AD with great prices, a large selection of pre owned inventory that delivers and I am all in

Plus- I got my Pepsi for a heck of a deal...complete for around 4k- it's keeping time so far at -2 seconds a day...not too shabby for "pre-loved"!

I've always bought brand new, or at the very least BNIB. Although I appreciate there can be significant cost savings when buying secondhand, it's not for me.

it depends what you buy...
My wife wanted a TT DJ. I bought her a pre-loved one and the Trusted Seller had it serviced and replaced the crystal and I bought it for about 1/4 the price of a new one. I don't think my wife could love a watch any more than she loves this one. In that case, it WAS worth it.
On the other hand, I bought my father a B-day gift (a BNIB AK). I couldn't even think of buying him a pre-loved.
