Steve Berry: Great author, but not a WIS

Hi all,

I'm reading Steve Berry's latest novel: The Jefferson Key.
As always, it's compelling and an enjoyable read, but last night, I came across this horror:

"She motioned at his wristwatch. A Rolex Submariner. "You like it?"
What was not to like? Gilt-faced. Gold lettering.
Accurate to a tenth of a second on a battery that lasted practically forever. A gift to himself a few years ago after a particularly lucrative assignment."

Steve Berry is usually relatively well-informed, but this sucks.
I'm rather disappointed, or is there a new model of Sub I missed?

Any comments?

Writer's license?

I'm working through all of his stuff via CD, as my job gives me plenty of windshield time.

Since I'm in the "B's", I've also discovered Ted Bell's series Assassin, Pirate, Spy, Tsar, Warlord

and the Shane Scully series by Steven J Cannell

Beat me to it:

Chapter 31: ...he walked slowly but purposefully towards the market trader, and, as he approached, flipped off the safety with his well-practiced right thumb. "I hope you realise you've made me a laughing stock at the Golf Club", he growled, as he levelled the pistol at the terrified...

Is he using 'battery' as a metaphor to an automatic movement LMAO. Who knows but there is definitely on way to cover up his use of 1/10 of a sec accuracy.

Why? My Sub-C is accurate to 1/10th a day, and it's battery never needs replacing... :) Actually my Sub does about 4 seconds a week, I check it when I cock the hammer back on my Glock.

But it's true, mechanical movements last practically forever. Compared to crummy batteries of course

I feel lightheaded. Maybe I should go lay down and rest for a bit. And I think I'm going to be ill.

Write him and his editor a letter and they may fix it for the next edition.

Issue? It's a joke, and, I thought, rather a good one, though I say so myself. Deconstructing humour tends to kill it stone dead, but here y'all go:

Action thriller - fake watch - market trader - golf club where people would spot a fake - embarrassment of action hero - revenge.

PM me if you need the joke explaining to you in any further detail.

Still don't get it. Nothing mentioned about a watch, just a thumb safety.
If someone is pulling out a firearm, I'm not concerned with the authenticity of his timepiece.

The guy could be wearing long-sleeves. You didn't mention his attire.

Love the reactions, guys!

Some of you actually made me laugh.
Excellent jokes!

Anyway, I just sent Steve Berry an email. We'll see what comes of it, if anything.
(1% on his sales would be nice...)

Ian Fleming did take advice from readers on a few issues with Bond so you never know...

Yes, I do know they have an internal striker, and yet, in books and movies, you'll see a guy somehow cocking a hammer that doesn't exist on their Glock. Same thing as this author's ignorance about watches.
