resale value : Patek versus Lange

2 great brand, I prefer Patek but Lange is great too

BUT when looking at the resale value Lange sucks big time
Almost all their watches can be found at -40 till -50%.
Almost every watch they make can be seen at the AD
No Lange has a waiting list and you never see premiums
In fact , Do they have 1 single 'hot' watch ?

Than look at Patek
100% the opposite
HUGE waiting lists on a lot of models
BIG premiums
And at auctions they are always the number one, by far !

Somebody has an explenation ?

The market make the price, not the product.

Patek is has more than 170 years of undiscontinued history.
Everyone knows the brand. The market is huge.

Lange came back in the 90s, only true amateurs know it. This market is quite more reduced.
Most of them loses their value... true, which make them quite interesting on the second hand market. A real deal actually.
But even the Datograph which could be found at 25k€ some months ago can now barely be found under 30k€
Try to find a Zeitwerk Platinum or Luminous in an AD... you won't ;)

I can't remember the price of the 1815 Moonphase platinum years ago. (16ke? less? more?). Now 30k€ and above.

Look at the Nautilus, it is impossible to get at an AD but a lot are offered on the second hand market.

I agree, but on the other hand, people who buy Patek are true amateurs , and I'm sure every Patek owner knows Lange.
But still they don't buy Lange

Whenever a Lange appears on one of the used sellers websites they're snapped up quickly.

There's a lot of Pateks on the grey market and a lot of the auction pieces are sold and bought by anonomous bidders.....draw your own conclusions but Mr Stern has gone on record as saying that auction prices are of utmost importance to Patek.

I can post links to Lages who are for sale and are already very long for sale, even at a very low price they don't sell
Ofcourse you see more Pateks for sale, Patek makes more or less 40.000 watches per year, Lange 5.000 or 6.000

IMO, when you spend big money for an automatic movement watch, you should be expecting to have it for a lifetime+. Because they will all need maintenance, knowing the brand will be around for 50+ years is critical. For this reason, Patek should have more resale value. This is not criticism of any watch brands, but stability and history are very important for a longterm commitment.

Lange is on the way (back) up.

The company and its family history are getting some good coverage but they aren't going to turn into Patek tomorrow (or perhaps ever) .

I'd still love to have one and likely will at some point. They are among the best watches being made. It can't be easy to execute at that level or we'd be talking about more than just "Patek vs Lange". That's some rarefied air fellas.

I own a couple of Patek's, so I obviously love the brand, but Lange is also a fabulous brand. The Datograph, Dato perpetual, Zeitwerk and the double split are examples of watchmaking at it's finest, IMO.
I believe the two brands both occupy the upper shelf of watch manufacturers.

I was looking for a Lange a few months ago. Almost every website listing them for sale didn't actually have them in stock. The apparent availability and he reality can be quite different.

Now look for a 5146 or a Calatrava and you'll have no difficulty picking one up at all.

I paid around 30% less than new for an as new 5296 with all papers and still within warranty.

Having bought and sold a few watches over the years I'm fairly confident that it's a bit like the Harley Davidson resale myth. These things never depreciate? Just try selling one....
