Why spend that much on a watch?
Well, i guess you guys get that said to you quite often too.'It only tells the time' other will say, which is true, but a fine watch is an item of beauty to me, almost a work of art! And i guess unless you're really into your watches you just won't get it.
What do you guys reckon? |

Why spend that much on golf clubs? Why spend that much on motor cars?
It all comes down to being my hobby, and like you said,it is a thing of beauty,a work of art. Besides its my money. Aaron |

Well speaking for myself thats a hard question, a little bit like why did
the chicken cross the road.Yes and a fine mechanical watch can be a thing of beauty. But I can get as much satisfaction out of a mechanical boot-sale find,to watches costing several thousands pounds. And if I get asked that question about cost, its my money and I will buy what I can afford.

I smell a rat!!! ...and get the funny feeling that this thread has been hijacked by a couple of football fans!!
Hi Hammer, Getting back to your original question, I've been asked this quite often...once by a guy who drives a flash car. So I asked him: "Why drive that beautiful car just to get from A to B? It must have cost you a bomb!! After all, any POS can do the job!" That shut him up and convinced him. The other time, someone asked me why I bothered spending thousands of dollars when superb replicas were availble for around $250 or so. I know this guy is very fond of Ford Mustangs, so I asked him if he would even consider buying a Mustang which was built in some backyard garage with a big Chevy block thrown in for grunt...and he emphatically said: NO!! Well, I looked at him, then looked down at my Rolex and....he understood!! JJ

In a country like mine, well in my work environment, it’s not possible to explain why you are wearing a plain, steel watch that cost $4000, while any $30 watch will do. I will not do this and as many of you stated: it’s my money, not theirs. Although it’s a bit sad you have to explain at all. Many of the arguments you can think of apply to a good Aqualand as well, so what remains is pure emotion. And that’s a good reason for buying a Rolex. Take care, Frans.

I think this is a great question. I buy and wear these watches because like Aaron said, this is a hobby of mine that I really enjoy. I come to these sites however for the friendships I have made.
It is like collecting or being into anything else, just in our case it is specific to watches. And like a few others have said, when all else fails, it is my money and as long as the Mrs. and family are secure and comfortable, I'll make myself happy without hurting anyone else.

I think the real answer is prestige and maybe a bit of the pose value. After all we could buy a watch for a few dollars that would give us an accurate time but we want something more, we want everyone to know that we only wear the best. Incidentally I have been wearing my Glycine every day since I bought it, I can't get over how good this watch is at a very reasonable price.
