what causes scratches on watches?

Yeah I get banging watch on hard surface can cause scratches

but how are those hairline scratches on most random places made?

I sit possible that soft material like shirts can cause this?

Everyday life. One of tne the reasons I love my SD & vintage GMT is the ease it takes to keep them looking new. My TTs & 18kt gold models were a pain to keep up

Shirts can definitely cause a lot of fine scratches...especially if you use a lot of starch in your dress shirts.
Cleaning them w/improper cloths can do the same...and NEVER use paper towels...even the soft ones will cause scratching.
I try to only use microfiber cleaning cloths to wipe my watches...but I have been known to use a t-shirt, in a pinch

Invisible floating dust that contains microscopic quartz particles.. The particles setting down on the watch and then moved with some clothes will cause your watch to show small light scratches..

Paper scratch one of the toughest materials on this planet S.Steel, and with the 100s of past posts on 904L SS with Rolex bragging how tough it is.Today the average Rolex watch gets such a pampered life they might as well make them from glass.Just cannot see why you guys worry about a few tiny scratches on your watches, when its serviced it will come back as good as new only to get scratched again.Every day scratches are a fact of wearing any watch,if you don't what scratches keep it in its box,but then its not much point in buying a Rolex watch.

Fair enough, thats a good point, however when spending 5K+ on a Rolex, I'd prefer to keep it scratch free

Im guessing this thread refers to scratches in all places on the watch except the sapphire crystal? I thought that sapphire crystal is almost scratch proof so surely you can wipe the crystal with anything bar a cloth encrusted in diamonds??!!! So is a microfibre cloth recommended for all other parts of the watch. Personally i dont really care about surface scratches on the band or case but i big ding in the SS case would be dissapointing! As for the crystal if it did get scratched you can just replace it at next service. The other day i met a bloke who had on a SS Sub and it looked hammered from everyday use. It actually looked pretty cool seeing how much of a beating it had taken but in its own way still looked great on his wrist! I say relax and enjoy the toughest watch in the world and as ive read in other posts here on TRF your Rolex will easily handle anything your body can...to a point!

This is one of the better posts of 2011...Great stuff!! This is why you should wrap your watch in saran wrap to protect it. It might look funny but at least you can still tell what time it is.
