Vintage Rolex's

what's your take on a vintage Rolex?, here's mine i love the look but unless i could get a "safe queen" rare and expensive without shall we say the patina of daily life over many years, im guessing i'd be just as happy if rolex went somewhat retro in its watch features, noteably were talking the dial i guess. am i missing the point do those with vintage pieces purchase them not purely for the look but something else more along the lines of a collector? . whats the score on rolex serviceing these pieces have i got this wrong? you could send in a vintage piece and effectually come out with a D series lookalike.

afterthought

if one was to start a quest for certain piece, im guessing im letting myself in for more dissapointment than joy until "that piece" turns up! any stories, you know the sort you travel hundreds of miles to the holygrail only to find its a POS mis advertised or the seller has rose tinted glasses

Well Steve most of the vintage watches have a lot of character a few
dings and scratches is part of its history. The thing a collector looks
more for in a vintage Rolex is 100% originality in all parts of watch.
The most important the dial case and movement. If a vintage Rolex dial is
damaged, a little bit of restoration, would be better than a new dial. Like
say owning a 5513 sub and put in a modern day sub dial, would totally destroy the value of the 5513 sub.So in most cases it would be better to get a
watch thats 100% original that one that had a lot of restoration. As for a
Rolex service, just a oil lube service, and perhaps a gentle case polish only
your watch is a vintage piece, worst think to do is having it look brand new.
Every vintage collectors dream,is to find a NOS (new old stock) vintage
Rolex, unworn still in the box,but now much rarer, than rocking horse sh##

Picture two 1922 Rolex Unicorn my cheapest watch, but one of my favourites.

I've already done that joke but used the term "fabulous" as from fables.

I sometimes wonder if anyone listens.

Can't really "listen"; but why can't some of these tossers "read"?

It is a different feeling

For many it is the 'hunt' that makes collecting vintage their cup 'o tea. For others like myself, I just love the fact that this watch is over 32y/o and looks like it could be in a jewelers case. I wonder where it has been etc. Also, I know I will not run into anyone with an identical watch on their wrist. You just cannot walk into a store and buy something like this but you can do that with a new one. It is hard to describe the feeling, warm and fuzzy as stated. But you need a Rolex trained watchmaker because Rolex will insist on changing the hands and ruin the watch. Also, Rolex is not real crazy about working on these due to the liability. =) maverick

This is the oldest one in my collection - mid 1983 TT DJ. Has never been serviced and runs like a top.

I am still looking

I am still searching for "that" vintage piece.

I know it will either be one of the first Day-Dates or first Milgauss watches in perfect condition.

Second generation will not do for me.

It is a Day-Date that I am really after .... I was told that they are now very rare. I have come across one but it had a new dial and a diamonds added ...... Not the watch for me.

The waiting, searching and looking are part of the fun. I almost hope I don't find what I am looking for so I can keep on "Playing" this game.

I like it, too, but not quite as much as my other TT DJ with the raised gold Romans and Jubilee bracelet. I would not part with it, though, because it was the first Rolex I bought for myself. So if nothing else, it has great sentimental value.

As far as having it serviced, can't say, Mav. My philosophy is: If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I did buy my father a 1601 from 1977 two years ago as a birthday present, I guess if it has accrylic crystal, it must be vintage.

One I have been looking at

This is a 50's Super Oyster. I have been think of offering my TT GMT in trade. Not sure. I do not know much about the Super Oyster. It does not look like the crown screws down like regular Oysters do.

Hi Charles, I hope that elusive DD shows up. Sounds like you are enjoying the hunt. I may never buy another NIB Rolex again. It is good seeing you on this great site.

dman, you do not buy vintage for its super glow in the dark old lume. ;-)

Nice one, Ed. The black Romans are almost as good looking as the gold applied ones. I think you should have it serviced before things start to fall apart and you really wind up with a big bill for servicing as well as replacement parts.

I do not have a model number, but it is 14K. I have bought other vintage watches from this seller, including an old TT Oyster from the late 50's, which I later traded for a vintage 18k Omega Constellation.

I know, LOL!! But I like to be able to see my watches throughout the night. It is a long story, but I hate fumbling for my glasses when I wake up, I also hate squinting to see the clock radio.
You can actually see the man in the moon through my glasses if you try hard enough, someone once told me when they put my glasses on they could see the future, you get the idea.

I am just more content with the glow of the newer and bigger dials.

Well Mort your picture is a bit small, but it looks like a 6084 and if auto a 25 jewel. They retail in the UK for around
£900--£1500 for a mint example more if with gold bracelet. Some of these watches were given as retirement
watches,or a presentation watch. So some might have inscription on case back, this sometimes slightly devalues the watch. But not in all cases like if it was inscribed from a
Masonic lodge of free Masons, that would be very collectible .
