Icon5 Buy from an AD or a trusted TRF member?

I am planning to buy my first rolex. I had my mind set on an AD, but after reading several posts where many of you recommend buying from a trusted TRF member, I am no longer sure.

I am considering either a sub IIc (116610LN) or a deep sea (116660). An AD has offered to sell these watches to me for USD7,530 respectively USD10,090. Should I go with this, or will I be able to get a better price here on TRF?

(I live in EU)

You'll get a better price here. It all depends on what your looking to get in regards to the overall experience. Some buy from an AD and some buy from trusted sellers here.

The most important thing is that no matter whom you buy it from, you buy it from someone you can trust.

Look around, take your time. Determine what your priorities are before deciding.

you can get a new deepsea in the states from an AD for $9,000.00. if you pay more than that you are stupid.

If I buy a watch outside EU, then I have to pay app 30 pct in taxes when I bring it back with me

No you don't. Throw the watch on your wrist and ship the box back. I for price I would check around. You might be surprised what the AD's will sell watches for.

One thing a lot of people overlook is (especially with a first purchase) if you have any problems with the watch your AD will deal with he warranty work, and will be able to be an intermediary with Rolex. I for one think hat is worth something.
I think making statements such as " if you pay more you're stupid" is rude, condescending, and also stupid.
Good luck either way.

The Trusted Sellers here have a great track record and offer better prices than some ADs in many cases.

I am not entirely familiar with the warranty situation. I assume (don't know for fact) that in the USA you do not have a warranty when you purchase grey; but in other countries you may have a warranty. If you get an answer to that it may help you make an informed decision.

Congrats and acquiring a Rolex, your first no less.

My own experience here so far makes me want to buy from an AD again. I've tried dealing with one trusted seller here who hasn't done anything wrong or shady, he just doesn't bother to answer PM's. I know I'm new, but everyone has to have a first transaction before they can get a reputation. I can't get that first transaction if I can't get the time of day.

Doesn't sound pleasant at all. Not sure who your contact was with, but I used Davidsw and went through email rather than PM. give him a shot. I'll pm you his email address. I didn't have any feedback or many posts when I bought. He probably didn't think I was very serious till he got my wire, but he answered all my questions in a reasonable time.

To the op, my opinion is to buy here save money and if possible have the paperwork put in your name, if blank and stamped.

I would check the price the trusted member is offering and go to an AD and negotiate to buy from them a that price . if it's pretty close you can get it same day from an AD. Also some AD will give you an extra year warranttee with the purchase.

I agree, thats the way to do it...negotiate with your AD andget it for the same price as the grey market and you have a 2 or 3 year warranty to boot !

I prefer buying mine from an AD, I posted the reasons in the thread... "what is the AD experience" or... something like that, so won't go in to it here, but I truly enjoy the experience.

HAVING SAID THAT... I completely understand you can probably get a significant discount purchasing from one of the fantastic dealers here on TRF and if you decide to go that route, highly reccomend Tony (JustRolexes) or DavidSW or Greg (Mosco). You will be treated very professionally and happy with the deal I'm sure.

Thanks I am eager to get my hand on my first Rolex, but before I buy I have to make up my mind and decide whether I should go for the Sub or the Deep Sea…

I thought that the warranty on Rolex was international, and it didn’t matter, which Rolex AD I handed my Rolex if I got problems?
If I buy from an AD, is he then the only one who can fix possible problems, or can I turn it in to all ADs to have it fixed?

So I risk not having warranty if I buy from a grey market dealer? This might be a deal breaker to me…

This is what I have been trying so far, but the prices I have been presented by national (Danish) ADs are way too high…

If there is a difference of more than $300 dollars I would buy from a TRF trusted seller.

Trusted sellers here on TRF have a great reputation. However, and AD will include the 2 year warranty. Something to consider...

1. SubC or DSSD, up to you - personally i'd got the DSSD route...but show us your wrists

2+3. all watches come with international warranty, unless stated the watch doesn't come with papers. ask one of our trusted sellers if the watch comes with papers (most of them do)

3. coming from DK too i'd never buy anything over there anymore as prices are insane, even with 10-20% discount. i keep buying spare parts though as Danish ADs aren't lokced into the silly 'exchange basis' policy...

Good luck

I've bought 3 watches off one of the trusted sellers on this forum, and couldn't be happier. All 3 have been to the Hour Glass on the Gold Coast (Australian AD) for re-sizing and valuation and they know I buy off the grey market in the States. I always get asked how much I paid while having a chat with the AD while the watch is being looked at and on each occasion, he's said he couldn't possibly have done the deal(s) at anywhere near that price.

Each to their own of course, but I can't justify buying from a bricks and mortar shop when it would have cost me thousands of dollars more to do so.

It's all about price; that is, a highly regArded seller that you have established to be excellent (buying the seller) against an AD worth the AD status. My AD is unbelievably good, so I would normally use them, but if I was getting a great deal on here, no problem, I'd buy here.

I agree, did it once 48 years ago.

My excuse, I was too young to know better.

Here I am wearing a seiko monster (44mm)

Sry, could not resist flexing

I have been in contact with a couple of trusted seller and so far I haven't gotten better prices than I have been offered from an AD in Southern Europe.

The prices I got from the grey market guys was very close to my local AD so I'll take the 2 year warranty and run. No risk from an AD and basically same price.
