I've often wondered how accurate people's automatic watches were.

I nearly bought a Breitling Superquartz after a horrendously inaccurate Seiko automatic.

In the end, I couldn't spend over 1000GBP on a quartz and so I bought a Breitling Colt II automatic.

Initially it was about +3 seconds a day but after 2 weeks settled to between 0 and +1 seconds per day.

Have I been really lucky or are new Breitlings very accurate now Breitling have linked up with Kelek?

How accurate are other people's Breitlings and other brands.

To be honest with you, I don't really pay attention. If it is way off, I am sure I would notice.

I am averaging just over 3 sec per day with my Z series SS Sub with date.

Mine has run anywhere between +2 to -2. I check it about once a week on time.gov, but that's just for education purposes...I don't stress too much about the precision of my Rolex.

As John Ireland says, I've never been or needed to be within +2/-2 for anything in my life, so I certainly don't expect my watch to be.

If I really needed such tight precision I wouldn't have bought a mechanical watch, and if I get really anal about the time I can adjust every other month when I have to pull out the crown to change the date anyway.

2006 Sub date: -3 seconds a day

2007 GMT-II (no, not the new model): -1 second a day

2000 Jeager LeCoultre Reverso Grand Talle: Can't really tell due to non-hacking movement, but very good, It's not CSOC rated either. I don't really care, I LOVE this watch.

Russian Poljot submarine watch, with Auto movement, +30-45 seconds a day. Hey it's Russian!! What do you expect???

If I had known that a quality automatic would be so accurate I wouldn't have considered a quartz!

I have results all over the place but I don't obsess over this the way I used to. Some of mine are fairly cheap, some expensive. I find they usually become less accurate before servicing and after 5-6 years or so. Let's see, I have several older models around 20-30 seconds off per day, maybe 4 of them right now. I have a few who are 10-20 seconds off per day, 5 of them. I have several 10 seconds or less, 6 of them. What I have noticed is that this doesn't necessarily correspond to price. And they usually perform better after servicing. I don't have any Rolex or Omega currently, but in the past they have been my best performing brands. I think it's odd at first glance that it doesn't matter if I paid $1000.00 or $10,000.00, the brands seem to perform about the same with the two exceptions I noted. When I first started collecting, I was obsessed with this. Now I have a more relaxed attitude although I do normally check it with a spreadsheet for about a month when I first buy it just to make sure it's OK. I normally switch watches once a day--a diver in the evening through my morning swim, then I switch to my work watch.

My no date sub 14060 was spot on for a week after coming back from service from RSC Toronto.

Currently my SD is running about +2 / day, and the Breitling out of the box has been -4 /day. I'd rather have the watch go fast than slow so it needs to be regulated.

My SMP appears to be a tad fast, while the DateJust is approx -1 sec/day.

I'll time my SMP and update this post.

Well after a bit of fine tuning I have a Alpha manual wind $80 chronograph thats been running constantly,for about 12 months thats well within the COSC specs daily.And straight out the box Vixa type R with a ETA 2824-2T movement thats one of the most accurate watches I have ever owned for less that £200.Now any Rolex built in the last 30 plus years I would expect them to run well inside the COSC spec. Because its quite simple they were all built to do it in the first place.

to me anything outside 5mins differential is term as not accurate.

I agree not accurate but seriously does it matter???its a mechanical movement with a thousand small parts that you need a magifier to even see. When you buy a Rolex, time is on your side!

Bit i have recently noticed it is fast by +1 seconds per day.
Not owning a mechancal watch before I was worried if something was worng with the watch...

I always thought the rolex was accurate to 1 sec in a year

I assume this is normal.
Any links that you can provide on what is considered normal operating limits would be appreciated

Your watch is very accurate.

To be considered a chronometer (COSC) it should be between -4 and +6 seconds a day.

Well think of it this way but remember your watch is mechanical and even a very cheap quartz watch. Is going to be far more accurate than any mechanical watch.Now your mechanical watch is very accurate indeed and is well inside the COSC spec -4 +6 a day.Now in 24 hours, the escapement of a mechanical watch pushes the gears 432,000 times. Since a day has 86,400 seconds, even a watch that runs five minutes fast or slow each day has an accuracy of over 99.6 percent! A finer mechanical watch that gains or loses about nine seconds a day or about a minute a week has a breathtaking precision of over 99.99 per cent. This is very high precision, given the fact that the movement is constantly affected by the earth's gravity, metal expansion and contraction, temperature variations,subtle changes in lubrication and friction, shocks, and so on so your +1 second a day is quite a marvel for any mechanical watch.

I got my SD on 4/7/07, brought it home and set by http://www.time.gov

It has been on my wrist since full time (with the exception of some tubing I did today! (I had a Sub 15 years ago, but it was lost in a wicked wipe out while tubing off the back of my buddies boat. Not one of my smarter moves!)

Just checked it for the first time since seeing this thread and the SD has lost exactly 20 seconds! Much better than I remember my Sub being, even though it was a long time ago.
