Is it safe...with Rolex?

To take a walk with Rolex to avoid dust?
(My opinion for these questions is usually: If You can not afford to use Your Rolex in normal daily life, You can not afford to have one. My daily beater is SS Daytona).

No, seriously:I have been travelling with my Rolexes to many countries without any problem, but what do You think, is there some countries, that it would be better to leave Your Rolex home, when You go there?
I know, every country can be dangerous, but I mean dangerous also at the daytime and public places. I quess Brazil, any other? Just read the topic about Ibiza and I am also asking this, because I have to travel soon to Tashkent, Uzbekistan (anyone been there?) and I just wonder, would it be better this time to leave my Rolex back home to avoid any extra problems, even I have insurance.

You should search the forum on this question. There have been hundreds of posts about what countries to not travel with your watch. If you have insurance, just wear it.

As for your mantra of if you can't afford use in daily life you can't afford to have one? Not sure what you are meaning here.

I have a friend that has the theory that you should never wear a watch that is more valuable than a human life. I agree in that there are some places I would be concerned about wearing a good watch, but those places are likely not on my list of places I will travel to. (eg Somalia or Iraq).
In more "normal" places you have to use good judgement, possibly keep it covered or occasionally slip it in your pocket(of course there are always pick pocketers). In the end that is why I have insurance-if it is your watch or your life it will be the watch.

Mexico is another country where you should avoid taking your Rolex with you. Thieves can spot them from a mile away as there's a big market for pre-owned watches down there. I was robbed twice when I lived there. First time it was a SS Oysterquartz, second time a Bulgari Diagono Aluminum.

Better we safe than sorry!

Not my mantra, but sorry, if I offended someone. I just meant, that sometimes You can see a bit silly questions here, what can be done and what not with Your Rolex. Just my opinion, that if You buy a watch, just wear it and not worry about scratches etc, it is meant for normal daily life. And if You are very concerned over every scratch, maybe some other watch is better for You.

But maybe some foreign places are not "normal" daily life.
I not tend to worry too much, I have had my Rolex with me in many places during days and nights, from Thailand to China, Caribbean and many many other countries in Europe and elsewhere.
It is a whole different issue to be stupid (not to think about these kind of things), than "worry too much". I have been in places, that I know, it is better to slip that watch to your pocket or cover it with something, but in some places, maybe it would be better to just leave it home, if You would have to cover it all the time.
Even with insurance, it is not very clever to wear it just everywhere. Some robbers just not "ask" for your valuables, they just take it, or maybe shoot You first...
But maybe I was misunderstood a bit. I tried to ask also, if someone have any experience from Uzbekistan (or some other places like that), concerning safety.
But, I will use search option for Uzbekistan, Thank You.

My friend was visiting down in Argentina last year and got his red Submariner ripped off his wrist. He said it happened so fast and the guy jumped on a scooter and was gone.

Personally, I wore mine wherever I went. Mine was destroyed in a accident while deployed to Iraq, but before that it never came off no matter where I was going, and I travelled quite extensively. Ultimately it's up to you. There is always the possibility of something happening no matter where you are in the world.

I wore my Rolex GMTIIc to Mexico. A guy tried to sell me a fake...I told him his prices were too high and told him I bought mine for $25.00 :)

Hi you all! A couple of months ago I started a tread with the same purpose,"Is your city safe?" to wear a Rolex? Because mine isn't!
http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=181339
Here in Rio and Sao Paulo they have gangs specialized in assaulting high end watches.I would ad not to use a Rolex in Rio unless you stick it in your pocket and wear it when you get to the meeting or restaurant. I lived 10 years in New Jersey and New York and never had problems. The same happened when I lived for 15 years in Los Angeles.Take care now!

I guess wearing an expensive well known watch comes with a certain risk no matter where you are. I get a little paranoid when I'm riding the metro in Sweden with short sleeves exposing my Exp2, not that is really known model (but the magnifier over the date is a give away).

If you take it abroad it should be a calculated risk on your part. You are a turist, looking lost, visiting landmarks, rainway stations etc and you should be aware of the possibility to lose it. All IMO.

Rolex in Rio and Sao Paulo

I all depends on your attitude, the place and at what time you´re wearing your Rolex.
I have plenty of Rolexes robbered in the last 20 years; first was an Submariner, in Sao Paulo (Itaim Bibi neighborhood) when I was in a car and a guy just stick a revolver in the car window...I get to use my Rolexes in the right wrist while driving to avoid over exposure.
Another time, in Botafogo, Rio, Leaving my daughter in a traditional school (Santo Inacio), same situation, a pistol over my head and a Rolex AirKing went away.
Some years later, walking with my labrador in Arpoador at night, at that time two bike boys with a revolver and I lost my Omega Seamaster.
Now I am with a brand new Rolex Sea Dweller Deep Sea and they robbered my wallet but I was cool enough to cover it with the other hand, appointing to where was my wallet (with the hand covering the Rolex and appointing the wallet) and this beauty is still with me - that happened in Sao Luis Maranhao.
When I am in Rio (my neighborhood is Ipanema, Gen. Osorio Square) I use my SDDS normally, only if is too late in the night that I hide him in the pocket. I mean, walking around Ipanema.
In Sao Paulo I NEVER use in the Congonhas airport because there are guys looking around and phoning for other thiefs that certainlly will rob you by bike during your taxi run.
Anyway I use Rolex wherever I am and only sometimes I hide. As someone said, you use Rolex even with the risk.

Even if half of that happened to me, I won't ever wear anything expensive outdoors in public in those areas. Just not worth the risk.

On another note, is Rio and Sao Paulo really that dangerous? I plan to attend the 2014 WC and will likely stay in both cities.

I have been to Mexico every winter for the past 10 years, and not all of it in a tourist area. Zero issues.

I wore my Explorer in Mexico several times, no issues. I don't feel comfortable wearing a Rolex in my hometown (Buenos Aires, Argentina) or in Sao Paulo / Rio though I did it several times as well.

I guess it is just a matter of wrong place / wrong time ... it could happen anywhere, just use some common sense and don't call undue attention.
