Been wanting a Panerai for a while now and i'm thinking about the 164.

Not my cuppa tea. I prefer the sandwich dial / no cyclops and just the 12, 3, 6 and 9.

But if you like it, go for it.

the 164 is a great watch! granted, i'm a little biased, it being my choice.

i went with the the watch for many reasons:
  • brushed case + polished bezel & crown guard (the 312 look, but, in a luminor case instead of the 1950s case, which doesn't sit well on my wrist)
  • a dial that is more symmetrical than the 111 (IMHO)
  • the numbers on the dial (my Explorer II has markers, so, the arabics make a nice change for me, and i'm not a "purist" that needs the "standard" PAM dial)
  • seconds hand (need to see something moving on the dial (besides the minute and hour hands, of course ))
  • quick change strap system (really fantastic for QUICK and safe strap changes)
  • date function (i've come to like the inverted cyclops for how it balances the dial and magnifies the date w/o causing a "bubble" on the dial like another well-known watch maker)
  • standard OEM straps that come with the 164
  • automatic
  • solid case back (like the feel of SS against the skin, plus, feels more "solid" to me)
  • painted dial (i feel it "pops" a bit more than the sandwich style, and feels more historic)
  • PAMs are pretty rare in my neck of the woods, and, the 164 is even more rare

my advice is to go to a boutique or AD and try on as many watches as you can. i accidentally discovered the 164 that way, and it ended up being perfect for me.

good luck!! and looking forward to the pix, because, since you've come this far in your panerai pursuit, it's only a matter of time before you join the dark side.

some pix....

on GSD CHII w/ black stitching:

on Toshi almond w/ natural stitching:

on OEM rubber (comes w/ watch):

on Ted Su baby hornback green w/ matching stitching:

on OEM gator (comes w/ watch):

There are a lot of references out there to cater to different palates. Make sure you visit the PAM website along with p.com to get more insight in the 164 & others.

Good luck!

Try as many models on as you can...

The 164 is a fantastic choice as Cru's pics clearly suggest.

Good luck!

Look around and take your time, as hard as it may be. You'll find that PAM DNA is rooted in simplicity. However, get what you like!

It's too easy to be impulsive with PAMs. Take your time, look around, try them on and get the one that sings to you the loudest.

Listen to Bryan and Marc. Take your time. Enjoy the ride, b/c most WIS just want another after they get one.

Try and plan your collection, make sure you really want each piece, etc.

The 164 is a great piece. What is it about it that you like? Tell us and maybe we can show you some other models you might like, like a 359 for example!

If you like the 164 but want a sammy (sandwich) dial, look at the 359. All polished arabic faux patina sammy dial. Say that 3 times fast.

Kind of like a double tall soy vanilla half-cafe latte.
