That is a nice Red Sub...congratulations. Hard to tell from the pics, but I'm guessing it is a Mk VI dial with closed 6's versus the Mk IV open and MkV semi-open 6. The case looks nice with thick lugs and crown guards.

Your dial is a Mk V dial with semi-open 6's. Look at the "L" in Rolex under the coronet as well as the centering of the letters in CHRONOMETER and CERTIFIED. Hope this helps.

Beaumont is right, its definitely a Mark V.
Coronet shape, L placement, and darker red paint. Good matching patina on dial and hands. What's the serial? Correct range should be from around 1971-72 (give or take a year). |

3,025,xxx serial. Beaumont sees a blemish in the 5 & 7 o'clock hash marks so the dial is not that perfect.
would you if you were me? my birth year is 1971.:) |

Correct serial for a Mark V putting it at 1971. Yes, I see that there are chips on the edge of the dial but this is to be expected on a 40 year old watch as the movement and dial have come off several times for service. Don't we have blemishes at 40 ;-)
There are perfect examples out there though if you are patient enough. It all depends on what you are looking for: A pristine example to collect? A daily wearer? Is it reasonably priced for the condition? What is the condition of the case (from what I gather on the pics it looks good)? What about the bracelet? Is it in good shape? What is the clasp code (to identify if it is the correct year)? Service records? Box? Papers? I fully understand wanting a watch from one's birth year. This is an irrational criteria that makes a certain watch more desirable. |

Looks like a nice watch.
However if your having doubts don't do the deal. Only get those that you are convinced are right for you. You'll be happier in the long run.

be careful before spending this kind of money. you really need to know the dates/serial number sequence cold. then figure out which dial (mk xxx) should be in the case. from what i have read, you could end up iwth an incorrect watch quite easily.

I confused as well...LOL. I would say that both of these watches are too nice to be considered weekend beaters.
When it comes to feet first Red Subs, I am a little partial to the ones with open "6's"...Mk IV dials. I think the second watch presents a little nicer than the first, however, I will be the first to admit that pics of the second watch are far superior to the pics of the first and may cause some bias.
