Rolex ads on Craig's List

I regularly check Craig's Lisa and other local sources for watches. And I never fail to be entertained by how sellers represent and over estimate the value of their timepieces. Rolex and Omega seem to show up the most and tend to be over valued the most. I regularly see Subs and Seamasters in rough shape being advertised for $1k or more than what the sell for on the Sales Corner here.

It seems there would be little interest in these ads given the prices but the only thing I can be sure of is that I am not interested. Have you guys seen the same?

Precisely the same.

Also see ads - no photos - for Rolex watches at high prices as well. Come on!

Furthermore, meeting up with someone you don't know, to purchase a watch you have not seen? Especially with the instances of robberies et al resulting from Craig'slist meet ups?

I've bought and sold a few Rolex watches (and some camera gear as well) on CL. As long as you know what your buying, and as long as you use common sense (meet at a safe place etc....) then it's all good.

People who buy from Craigs list may not always be as savy as they should be. However I would think they would at least compare prices with eBay first.

I personally wouldn't buy a Rolex from either one of these locations.

I have purchased and sold a couple of watches on CL. I feel that us forum surfers are a small group of watch owners. That being said, a non forum regular would not even consider sending someone they have never seen or do not know several thousand dollars to wait fot a watch to be sent to them. IMHO many non forum members feel that meeting at an AD or other watch store to confirm the watch is what it should be is the safer way to go? This also provides a level of protection to the seller as well when the buyer shows up with cash and the seller has a marking pen to confirm the cash is not fake. There are as I am sure you all well know TONS of scams out there and being a Detective am shocked on a regular basis by the fact that seemingly inteligent people blindly send money or merchandise in an obvious scam.

My limited experience dealing with CL selling watches has been that you can clearly list a firm price only to be blasted by REALLY SILLY low ball offers. As for myself, I will stick to the forums.

Regards,
Jeff

CL adds..

I sold all of my vintage watches on CL. The buyer knew what he wanted, met me at Starbucks with cash, no issues for me. Here is an add I just saw of the watch I am ultimately going to purchase...Seems legitimate, but I'd rather buy from someone I know, or a reputable physical store....

I've had two dealings with Craigs List. On the first the buyer could not have been nicer and the sale went fine. On the second the guy tried to scam me. I won't use Craigs List again.

I think that's a fair price for that GMT if the pictures are a fair representation of the watch. It's older, lug holes, so I'd want to know the year and the paper work appears OK, but really match up the numbers. Who knows, it may have been sold locally from an AD if the warranty ppw is completed.

It's worth a look over some coffee.

My AD was telling me a story last week of a gentleman who brought in a very nice looking GMT II wanting to check the authenticity. Stated he had bought it on craigs list for around 5,500. The AD said that everything (case, dial, bezel, bracelet) were completely authentic and beautiful. To the naked eye it was perfect. However when he opened it up, the movement and internal components were asia made and obviously all for scam. Made me feel sorry for the guy in a way! AD says the scammer prob used a couple thousand dollars for the outside parts! Wow what some people will do to others!

I personally really like eBay and CL. There are some really good deals on each and it's much easier to locate hard to find and rare items. I get that there are scams but use common sense. I found my RV on eBay and purchased my 33' Contender off CL. I have used them for many other purchases as well. As with any purchase buy the seller. I'm sure if someone is really trying to sell a genuine watch they would have no issues getting it verified.

I have sold a few of my Nikon cameras and accessories on CL.

I sell locally only accepting cash and have never had a problem.

Also purchased used power tools and a few gas grill tanks and again zero problems.

If you know exactly what you are buying it is a great venue.
