Rolex Dials and Parts? Whats Real?
Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum here and this is my first post. I see alot of people buying and selling rolex dials on eBay and saying that the parts are 100% authentic, but how do you tell? I'm interested because I like vintage hard to find watches but sometimes the parts are unsalvageable. For example, I have seen Daytona dials with singer stamped on the back, and some with ROLEX with a crown on each side stameped on the back. Which one is the original? Should there be serial numbers on the back of the dials? Ebay can be a vicious world and it is always best to know what you are getting into and I would appreciate any help on this subject.

First a BIG welcome to TRF!
Singer has made dials for Rolex, so the ones you have seen with "Singer" on the back might be the right thing, but then again might NOT be the right thing. Many "desired" dial such as the Double red SD or vintage Daytona are copied very often, so - as you state yourself - you have to be very cautious to buy from Fleabay. The best thing is to arrange a meeting between you and the seller (if that is possible) and have an AD warrant the authenticity of the dial(s). Better safe than sorry

First..
Don't believe anything anyone on ebay says (or prints). Second.. Don't believe that the picture you see is the product that an ebay seller will send. It's just a picture ! Third. If you get past one and two, a loupe (10X is reasonable) can be your friend. Finally.. Buy the seller as much as the part...check out referrals and feedback. - Look at ebay as a sport....sometimes you win, and sometimes the other guy wins.. |

To be honest there are some fake dials so good even the experts are fooled at times.
There's really no short cut to studying a lot of dials and becomming familiar with the differences in text and font. Unless I knew the seller very well I be very carefull. |

Thanks guys, I have a good eye when it comes to spotting fake watches, but I never thought about parts. Now, let me ask this, does the absence of the singer stamp indicate that the dial is a knock off? I have seen many without singer and held them in my hand and thought they were real. For instance, right now I have a late 80's daytona dial without singer and a old pres dial for the 1555 cal without singer on them. They look right on the money but now I'm not so sure. On a side note, ebay is getting better, but there still are plenty of people trying to make a quick buck instead of going back to college like a normal person. I promptly report those auctions. That is one of my biggest pet peeves.

This begs the question where can one get genuine parts? I really like what Jocke did with his DJ with the YM hands... if I wanted to do the same where on earth could I source genuine YM hands? Or any for that matter?

Thanks Mike, I've seen the seller they're talking about on ebay many times. He does sell many vintage movements and gets tons of money for them. I think he just sold a milguass for like 3 grand. Maybe I'll buy a dial just to see.
And Nikhsub1, I don't know who jocke is but I'm currently working on a place in CA to see what kind of stuff they're hawking. I'll let you know how it goes. Apparently they have lots of parts. Personally, I don't mind mixing parts from diffferent watches although I know that some others cringe at the idea. Well its my watch, and if I want a fluted bezel off of a datejust stuck on my vintage oysterdate, well I'm gonna do it. Actually I did already I know that now, if you want to change your dial at an AD, you have to give them your old one. Rolex doesn't want extra genuine dials and other parts going into fake watches. |
