Patek Calatrava or Day Date?

Hello Rolex Forum Members,
I already have a lovely Rolex Explorer II with polar dial.

I am looking for a special watch for myself -something that is special to me and something I can be content with. Will this watch collecting sickness ever end?

I have decided on either a Pre-Owned Patek Philippe or a Rolex Day Date President.

Thinking of a Patek Calatrava in hopefully white gold (but yellow is fine) or a Yellow Gold President - probably 18238 with no diamonds.

I saw a beautiful Calatrava 5127 a short time ago.... hopefully something like that.

Should I walk on the Patek side?

I know this is a Rolex forum however I do believe members here are truthful.

The only concern is the cost of Patek Philippe servicing.

if its a 6000R or G then I would go for the patek if not , get the DD

I am currently wrestling with the same problem except I am looking at a patek 5127j or a DDII YG. I cant decide between the two so maybe this thread will help us decide

I'd recommend getting a 5296 or 5127. Service costs on non-complicated (not counting second and date functions) watches aren't so bad.

Patek definitely. If you're collecting, you can get away with not having a day date if you have the Calatrava, but if you have the day date, you know you'll eventually go for it. Why wait if you can swing it now?

Without a seconds hesitation I'd go for a Calatrava.

To me the DD has a bit of an identity crisis... It's considered a "dress" watch but, IMO, they cyclops, full size second hand, day/date complication and the chunkiness of the oyster case mean it is FAR from a dress watch.

I want a Calatrava as my dress watch to compliment my everyday/sports Rolex. Personal preference is for the yellow Gold since it will match my signet ring, cufflinks and shirt studs and is, IMO, a bit more classic. I'm not a fan of yellow gold watches in general but with a white dial, black strap there is very little on show and, to me, the white gold is kind of lost against the White face.

Quite different all together. In a way you pay more for the gold when chosing a DD, with a Patek you pay more for the movement and finish IMO (and of course you pay the most for the name on the dial). For a dress watch I prefer the Calatrava, the DD is kind of casual with the oystercase - if you can call a solid gold watch casual. 5127 also has a crown guard which is odd but gives it a more contemporary look.

You should also check out Vacheron Constantin's patrimony line, some stunning watches too.

OK for me the DDII platimum with diamond dial. Calatrava is too small for my wrist. Having said that I am looking for a simple thin dress watch and have been looking at the automatic Piaget Altiplano as it is 42 mm. It currently holds the worlds records for the thinest automatic movement and watch.

I just dont feel that I get anything for the money I put down for a PP when comparing a chunk of gold Day Date. :) maybe Im too cheap but I vote for Rolex!!!

How about a 118239 or 118209 (white gold) DD ? White gold DD very special watch that you don't have to fuss with manual winding nor be terrified that bashing it into a door jamb (which will inevitably happen eventually) will completely ruin the watch. The trusted sellers right here on the forum can source these for you nicely.

Both great choices but completely different watches. You can do anything but dive with a DD, while the Caltrava is strictly an office/dress watch. I like both watches and don't own either.

I own a 5196R...not the least bit blingy or noticeable, but I'd sell all my other watches before parting with that one.

I have found, as a whole, cooler people wear Rolex. I like both brands...just saying. The Day-Date is beautiful. But Patek is more "Stealth-Wealth"

An odd comparison, this. Do you want a dress watch? Or just a "special" watch?

If dress, then clearly the PP. Something special you can keep forever and wear with anything, go DD.

It depends on what you want. I personally think the PP is a better watch, but non WIS will not recognize it as such. In fact, non WIS will probably not recognize it at all. If you want recognition by the masses, the DD is the way to go.


I'd take the PP any day.
