Rolex 16750 Purchase - matt or Glossy?
Hi, A quick question as i seem unable to make a decision! I have a number of modern Rolex watches (Daytona, Explorer II, GMT 16710, and a Datejust) and have been looking for some time for an immaculate GMT 16750. I'm in the UK and i have found 2 watches, both in stunning condition and include all papers and original sales receipts. The 2 choices are:
1983 model with original matt dial (serviced by Rolex UK in May 2011): £5400 1987 model with glossy dial (offered by dealer with 1yr warranty)£5800 I like the combination of a modern watch with a vintage feel offered by the 16750 but prefer it with a glossy dial. I know that the matt dial is more collectable and probably far classier. Prices are quite steep on both watches but my criteria is a watch in as near as possible to new looking condition of which both of these are. Really appreciate some views on this. |

Both watches being in equally good condition makes it a hard choice but I think both are overpriced.
I am also surprised that the gloss dialed 16750 is priced higher then the matte version which is a bit more sought after by collectors. The better value here I think is the matte dial GMT with the recent service. If both were equally priced my preference is the gloss dial with white gold surrounds, I think that is a classier looking watch. dave

Welcome.
The clear winner to the collector is the matt dial and given you have the gloss dial look in the 16710 might give you some versatility. As to pricing, of course condition is everything and I'm not familiar with valuations in your area. |

I would opt for the matte dial for a couple reasons... - it's the classic vintage look that gets better with time. - none of your other watches have a matte dial which sets it apart as vintage. - it will probably hold value / appreciate better over time than a gloss dial - I prefer the matte dial. If you do want a gloss dial, I would look for an early " no date" gloss dial; one that says " oyster perpetual" NOT the later and currently used "oyster perpetual date". Both prices sound high compared to what I see offered for sale here.
I own a 16750 w/ gloss dial. I really like it - it looks alot like a 16710. Based on you already owning the 16710 - I would look here for a 16750 matte from a credible seller. Good luck - and don't rush the hunt! |

Thanks for all the views so far, it seems that the matte dial is the clear preference at the moment among TRF members! Prices for excellent condition 16750's seem very high in the UK at the moment and I am going to (try) and take the advice not to rush the hunt for one. 2 years ago I paid £2600 for my 2004 16710 and now I'm looking at paying £5400 upwards for a 16750 which seems strange. I plan to keep the watch long term and wear it regularly so I'm keen to find the right piece.
Will definetly post pictures up for all to see when I've got one in my hands! |
