I just Realized that i can use my daytona as a GMT!

Well the way to do it is like for example your here in CA and you know Texas is 2 hours ahead All you would have to do is Run/Start the Chronograph at 10pm which will be 12am in texas. And Bam now your watches Chronograph is keeping time in a second time zone. Yeah adding 2 hrs to ur own time is simpler to do and maybe people that see the chrono second's hand active will think your daytona is fake. But hey its keeping time in a Second Time Zone!

So what do you guys think ? I gave texas as an example but you can always do any other timezone.

I wonder whether continuous running of the chrono function for prolonged periods of time will damage the watch in the long run.

You can use it as a date too, just let the timing hand run 1 sec a day and reset it when the month is ended.

It probably won't damage the watch itself but I'm pretty sure you will have to send the watch for a service a bit more often if you use it for that purpose.

To Chuck Norris (I never thought I'd write that on TRF ): that was an interesting discover but I'm wondering if there won't be any problem if, for instance, the chronograph is used and doesn't keep time anymore?

Continuous use of the chrono function for prolonged periods will not damage the watch, but it will use up the power supply, i think you can get about 48 hours worth of power versus the 72 hours without having the chrono activated...best thing about a daytona is you can take it off friday night, leave it for the weekend, and its still got juice in it monday morning =)

That would show the second timezone at that moment but you would have to continually move the chrono hand each time you wanted check again, right?

I was just thinking out loud when I wrote this. I think the run time on the 4130 is 77 hrs regular and 66 hrs of run time if the chrono is activated (fully wound up) . I haven't done it , but it wouldn't be a completely bad idea say if you were going to Ny for the weekend and such. Running it permanently might open a truck load of problems.

Ps. And if you were to do it , yeah the minute counter on the chrono runs for 30 min cycles but you could always look at the Actual Minutes on Main display for actual Minutes.(Going back to the Ca to Tx cenarion ) Say the chrono said 2:oo and 15 min but your display says 10: 45 min then you would know that its actually 2:45am and not 2:15am .
Just a little more thinking to go along with this post.

Done it many times. Wanna know how to read a 2nd timezone using a Submariner?

Let's say I want to track a time zone 7 hours ahead of my current location.

Starting with the bezel triangle at 12, I turn the bezel 7 hours COUNTER-clockwise

The regular hour hand gives me my local time, as normal, 9:11am.

Notice that the hour hand is pointing to 20 on the bezel.

The bezel # is 20.
Double the 20 = 40
Drop the zero = 4

Voila...4:11pm in the 2nd time zone.

That is a pretty neat idea. The problem for me is remembering these tricks (this and how to use your GMT as a compass). Cheers!

Running the chrono on my 'M' Daytona reduces the power reserve by 2.5 hours.
Where did your figures come from?
I run my chrono all the time when wearing it.

As for the OP's idea.................. he must try harder.
Most users of the GMT function can't wait till midnight or mid-day to set the function.
The 30 minute sub dial is also a bit of a deal breaker.
But it's good to see Forum members 'pushing the envelope'.

I'm confused as to how the recomendation made by the Op would work. This actually might be easier to do with a magic marker. When the time hits 10:00, make a mark on the saphire chrystal at 12:00. When the time hits 11:00 wipe off the mark at 12:00 and mark 1:00. So on and so on........................ Or you could do as you stated and just remember mentally to add two hours, or get a GMT.

Running the chrono continuously will probably not harm anything. Some people are of the mindset that it will. However the parts being used were designed to function, and for this purpose they would just see greater use. Hence they might see a bit more wear than if not used. But this is pretty much the same for the rest of the movement I would think. I know there are some of this forum that run the chrono continuously, but I don't.

It will require more power to run the chrono, but if the watch is worn on a daily basis so what as you would be building up the power reserve. As with any Rolex you may want to give it a full wind (50 for Daytona) once a week to top off the power reserve anyways.

Hi everyone! First post here. I do this. Start the chrono and stop it when you want the chrono hand to indicate 12 o'clock. You'll be able to read it like how Mark uses the SUB bezel. Been doing it for years too! Cheers!

Better yet just do the math in your head. You are either adding or subtracting a number up to twelve, in a "clockward twelve" pattern. Not tough, especially since we are all used to analog clocks and not digital. Middle school math at best. :)
