50th Sub

So, I was at a watch store, not a Rolex AD, the other day and talking about watches. I mentioned to one of the guys I was thinking of selling the LV 50th sub I have owned for a while and have never worn. He asks me how much I think I can sell it for and I give him a price. He tells me it is only worth $4,800 as everyone is waiting for the ceramic bezel subs coming out next year. First of all, we don't know that ceramic bezel subs will appear next year or ever, and the 50th Ann. sub is still in demand.

What do you guys think? I am seriously thinking of selling the green sub and I have not worn it since I bought back in in Nov. of last year. I wear my black-faced TT sub most days.

I think what he told you was baloney! Don't listen to his nonsense. The 50th anniversary LV Sub is still in demand, even if it was not as in demand as before, and we do not know if a ceramic sub will come out. He is just making a speculation, and he does not know anymore than this forum on what Rolex will introduce at Basel next year.

About your LV Sub, I believe that you can get a more than $4800 if you decide to sell it. Especially since you said you have never worn it as much. It should still be in a LNIB condition almost. I am pretty confident you can still get more than $4800 on that LV Sub of yours. For me personally, I would feel pretty sad to part with my watches, but if you never wear the LV I would leave the choice up to you. It hurts for me to say go ahead and sell you watch.

Anyways, whichever decision you make, I hope you make it based on how you really feel about the watch.

The LV will always be what it is. And Rolex won't deform an anniversary watch and do a green ceramic bezel unless they come up with a NEW anniversary at year 55 or some such thing. Unlikely. That is incongruent with the concept of a special edition. So enjoy your watch and quit listening to this kind of limiting stuff.

No AD has any idea if or when Rolex will do anything. That's all guesswork. In fact no AD knows if or when a price increase will occur.

Even if Rolex at some point does change the Submariner with the features we see on the 116710 that makes the current 16610LV a discontinued reference. One that was in existence for five years?

The LV Sub is still in demand, sure......But not to the extent it was last year.

They're just not the "hot ticket item" they were. Currently that place is being held by the new GMT II for the minions and the Daytona for the Hollywood set.

You may get more than 4800 for your pre owned LV today, I couldn't really say.......but maybe not tomorrow - and by next year at this time ????

You're not the first one to think of dumping his LV on this forum lately....I'm not sure what that means, but it could mean the LV frenzy is dying down....

As Mike put it very well, NO one but Rolex knows what will happen.

We can only guess. My own guess is that the Sub Date might get the "upgrade" with ceramic bezel, "Super Case", Maxi Dial and polished, solid centre links on the bracelet, but this change will most probable first happen to the YG Sub Date, then the TT Sub Date and finally the SS Sub Date.

This is at least what happened with the new GMT II.

$4800 is a fair and reasonable price for a second hand Sub LV. MSRP is $5525 and many ADs, will give you at least a 5% discount.

The guy was not telling you the truth, AD offered me $5,200 firm said he could sell it for over $5,800. I would never sell my LV as I would miss it the second it was gone.

I was offered 10% off new sub LV from AD, they finally sold it-but was on display for 3 months. I will wait for ceramic bezel new sub.

As with all pre owned watches it is just a matter of 'what will the buyer pay for it'.
Your AD may have somebody who is only willing to pay 4800$, the next door AD could have a client who loves it so much he will put 5800$ on the counter, all a matter of place, time, condition, person and of course your AD.
Every watch has a buyer, so if not content with the price, wait another year or try selling it somewhere else.
For instance SS - gold Rolex differences between South America and Europe ... Gold ones get a much better price in SA than in Europe and vice versa SS better prices in Europe.

Interesting discussion. I'm one who has recently considered flipping the LV for a black-faced TT sub or something else. I'm only in a position to own just one Rolex (for right now) and am a little unsure that the LV best represents a one Rolex collection. I love it and would probably miss it but have said in the past that I think the LV best compliments a Rolex collection rather than being the sole watch. I haven't decided yet though.

I would be surprised if you could get much more than 4800 for the LV. They are readily available now. Even my AD who never has anything rare from Rolex has one in the case and has had for about 3 months now.

Whether worn or not, it's still used and is not a current (probably) serial number. If the dealer offered 4800 for it and you want to sell it, make the move. You'll have to sit on it for a while to get more than that.

Any eventual 'upgraded' Sub would come with a hefty price increase. The question I want to ask is, compared with the LV, are you getting 'more' watch for the money?

Whatever the answer may be I'm sure Rolex would be very happy.

IMHO I think the $4800 offer is fair for these reasons:

1. No manufacturer warranty. Even if open papers you lose almost a year on the manufacturer's warranty.

2. It is pre-owned and new models are still available. In fact, I would go so far as to say fairly readily available. I've been offered the LV at list price at two different large ADs.

3. Your dealer is probably buying to resell in order to make a small profit on the watch. Think of his offer as a wholesale cost instead of retail.

4. Some ADs are offering discounts on the LV.

5. Without question, the new GMT is the hot watch in the line at nearly the same price.

Again, this is just my humble opinion.
