for some reason my laptop is always switched off, but my phone stays on (airplane mode).

i guess, the powering down of electronics is more to ensure that the device is not transmitting any radio frequencies that can potentially interfere with the aircraft.

The real reason why aircrews ask you to turn off your electronic devices is they want your attention just in case there is an emergency. I have flown the most advanced aircraft in the Navy - I have never shut off my cells phones - ever!

Never, or if they insist I only pretend to comply. I also don't freak out about resting my Rolex on a speaker box or computer either, people need to chill out.

Not only do I leave my electronic devices on, I make a scene when going through the metal detectors.

Yes, well I don't turn them "off", but I sure don't use them.

I put my iPhone on airplane mode.

However,

Traveling quite frequently in the US, I notice as a European a huge difference in the frequency in how often the flight attendant ask's a passenger to turn their devices off.

It happens in Europe, but not as often as in the US.

Yes, not complying is not worth the consequences. The interference is more theoretical but why take chances? I can certainly be without them for a while.

In a sense an iPhone is never "off", but in airplane mode it won't keep trying to find a cell tower.

I sat next to a gangsta wannabe who was texting after they made the announcement. He went on texting while we were making our way to the runway. He would, of course, hide the phone when the flight attendant would walk by and then continue on after they passed. Finally, when he was still texting while we were taking off, I put my face between him and his phone and told him to shut it off.

He looked at me and asked if it was any of my business. I said yeah and if he thought it was okay, why was he hiding it when the flight attendants walked by. He said nothing and packed it away. Needless to say, it was a very stuffy flight from NYC to Phoenix.

I really don't care if it doesn't interfere with the plane but until they remove that policy, don't do that crap next to me.

I cringe at the thought of airlines allowing people to yap on their phones while in flight... I know its coming and I hope they will offer phone-less flights like they offer quiet cars on trains. Too many people in America have no sense of volume when talking on the phone. I love restaurants that have a no cell phone policy and I hope the trend continues. Our country club in MI has it and I love it.

And this is coming from a guy who makes a living on his cell phones.

Bingo! When I fly my plane, I chat on the phone and have never seen a negative impact.

However, I still power down all my devices when they close the door...
