fountain pen newbie comments or suggestions

I have recently become interested in fountain pens. I have never used one before and think of myself as having an artistic touch and think it would be cool to learn calligraphy. I don't want to spend a fortune on a pen until I learn a little about them. After a little research, I have purchased a Pelikan M150 with medium nib and their premium Edelstein Sapphire ink. Does this brand sound familiar to anyone, and does this sound like a good beginner fountain pen? Any comments or suggestions? Thanks!

Thanks for the info fellas. I have read a lot of good things about Pelikan, so I will give their entry level pen a try. Now all I have to do is wait for Amazon to deliver the damn thing!

1) I'm a beginner at fountain pens myself! I chose the Lamy Safari, but because I'm considering using bottled ink (higher quality and cheaper but not as portable as cartridge ink), I don't want to mess with a converter. So I'm going to be looking at Pelikans because many of them have a built in piston that will suck the ink in (or so I'm told- again, I'm a beginner myself!).

2) Amazon Prime!! :)

3) Let me know what you think of the nib you get. I got an extra fine nib as I wanted to have my ink last longer but I now realize that I'm not getting as much ink with the speed I write. :( I'll be going with a fine nib next..

Kev647, there are many methods for filling a fountain pen and a piston fill or a converter are just two different methods. It will take a little time to figure out what size nib works best for you so check out all the different sizes to see which one you like best. I personally like the extra fine and accountant size nibs!!!

Lion,

Thanks! Maybe I'll keep trying with the extra fine..but I just feel like I'm getting more ink at the end of a stroke. Could be the quality of the ink too? (default blue ink that came with the Lamy).

As for refilling the ink, I think the piston method would be the most hassle free for those who want bottled ink. Converters can get kinda messy, right? I have only used ink cartridges and since converters are not that much, I may just buy one too see what it's like. :)

Kev647, converters are not messy and are actually quite easy to use. As for nibs the ink flows quite easily as long as you apply very little pressure to the nib and keep your strokes even!!!

Wow...that is incredible. I did lighten my pressure and my ink is flowing so easily! I was so close to returning the EF for just the F, but wow...thank you Lion! I appreciate it. I'm going to order the converter, ink, and then practice my italics! :)

As a long time MontBlanc User, I found it take time to get used to 'clean' refills from a bottle of ink. Stick with it and it becomes a no-brainier in your writing tasks!

I got my new Pelikan a few days ago, and man....there's no comparison to writing with a fountain pen! I used to carry around a cheap spiral 5X7 notebook with a Uni-ball ball point pen; now I am going to order me a Rhodia Webbie journal with a Gfeller leather cover. I'm gonna be stylin! My Pelikan and Rhodia are going to be my new best friends. Class baby!

Ronnie, I agree...nothing like a great pen and fine quality notebook to give you incentive to write!!!
