2 white dial explorer 2's comparisons
Hi guys, could someone enlighten me please, why is there such a big price difference on the two white dial explorer 2's as featured on this sellers site http://www.monster-time.com/rolex-co...y%20sports.asp (scroll down about half way) They look identical to me apart from one being a 16570 @ $3280 the other being a 16550 @$8,680

Different model
Hi there,
I believe that 16550 is more collectable than the 16570 for a few reasons. First it has the cal.3085, which is the first caliber to have the independant adjustable hour hand, latter replaced by the cal.3185, found on the exp.II 16570 and the GMT-II 16710. Also it is a quite short run product of Rolex, and the first EXP-II under the form we find it still now as the 16570. The 16750 existed in white and black dial. The white dial also had the unpainted white gold index and hands, compared to the newer 16570 which had painted black white gold index and hands. Rolex employed a white paint that turned cream after a while exposed to the light. That makes it a true rare collector watch for the reall Rolex freaks that we are... Now I would say that the 16550 model that is shown on your website had been altered because the dial hasn't the creamy color, the hands and index are black and not silver and the gap between " superlative chronometer" and "officialy certified" is not aligned as it should be. http://bjsonline.com/watches/articles/0016.shtml for more infos. I would stay away from this one. Cheers / Pierre |

I believe the 16550 was a transitional model between 1655 and the 16570. I think they were manufactured from 1985-1988. It had the 3085 movement.
Somewhat limited production drives the price up I guess. Some of the experts will soon sign in and give you more details.

Maybe I'm missing something, but that price seems awfully strong for a non-rail, non-cream 16550.
Certainly the 16550s carry a bit of a premium, but not that much. |

Cheers / Pierre
Thanks Pierre, I think I understand, all those different numbers lol. I rather like the new explorer white dial that young JJ treated himself to the other day which I think, from what you are saying, is the 16570. So it's the earlier 16550 that has the white dial that ages to a creamy colour, making it more collectable and consiquently more valuable, I just don't quite understand why theres such a big difference in the price, unless it's a misprint on the sellers part ? |
Hi Phil, The cream dial 16550 certainly carries a premium and is a sought after reference in the collector's arena. Not all white 16550s had the paint defect that turned to a cream color (in various shades) Nice examples with the bold font bezel seem to trading in the 8,5 to 12K range, of course depending on condition, B&P, etc..... While many collectors shy away from any cream that is not a rail dial, a couple feel some non-rails creams are authentic (assuming proper serial number range of course). I am not aware of a cream with black ring markers though. This is generally accepted version, NOT my photo, |

Mike, thanks for that, its all starting to look a bit clearer now Interesting that some people are prepared to pay so much more for the slightly different dial colour. I suppose the upside to buying the earlier Explorer with this kind of cream dial is that it will be an easier one to flip if you wanted to change models further down the track. By the way, have you noticed on this photo you used, the 24 hr hand looks off centre |
