Unscratchable gold coming to BaselWorld
Was anyone already aware of this? Pretty cool stuff. Wonder if Rolex will ever use it?

That would be awesome - what if all gold 10 years from now is scratch proof.

I would expect to see it in Hublot as co-developers of the technology but probably not Rolex. However, I'd be surprised if they aren't researching doing their own version.

Knowing Rolex... I am sure they will have this. They would be stupid not to. After all they claim to be the best. Plus I would expect to see something like that in a $22,000 to $30,000+ watch. Of course I am sure if they do actually do this you can expect the price for the watch to go up thousands. But I feel the price of the pre-2012 models in gold will go down. Just think an unscratchable watch. Litterally. Ceramic bezel can't be scratched, sapphire can't be scratched, and now gold. Well unless drag them across a row of diamonds. LOL Can't wait to see how this plays out!

It's a Hublot patent. Can't see Rolex using this anytime soon, the still won't DLC any of the models. As far as the idea goes I think it is excellent.

Where did you see that it's patented?

I think it's safe to guess that this process will produce "gold" that cost $10,000/ounce and shatters like glass. There is also the real concern that the gold will no longer be easily recovered, so you could end up with very expensive gold-ceramic that has a very low scrap value.

Doubtful

As for recovery, I used to work in a foundry that used ceramic filters, it was very easy to melt the metal out of those filters. The ceramic floats off as slag, I doubt this would be any different.

I've "liked" the Hublot Facebook page so I see this article a while back. I would not be surprised if Rolex and other watch companies as well jewelry manufacturers come up with a similar product.

Can't wait to see more in regards to this material and if it has any negatives that come with it.
