Hello.- Me, my Rolex and my story.
It was probably 1979 or 1980 and I was walking in a mall with my friends in my native Caracas, one of only three cities in South America with Rolex Service Centers in South America.
I stopped in a Rolex dealer to watch the beautiful Rolex display where they were showing a steel Date with a blue dial. I really liked it and decided to go inside and ask the price. The salesman didn't consider me worthy of his time (who could blame him, I wouldn't take a 15 year old accompanied by three more of his peers too seriously either if I was the salesman in a high end jewelry store). He made me go outside and point to him which one was the watch I was interested in. He just proceeded to turn a small label around allowing me to read the price for a couple of seconds (about the equivalent of USD 600) and went about his business. I was insulted beyond belief. It took me about to month to put the money together and ask for the same salesman and from him I bought my first Rolex, probably with a cocky smirk in my face. I graduated high school (1982) and law school (1988) with my beloved watch on my wrist. I went to countless parties and trips with it. And one day disgrace struck my peaceful and enjoyable relationship, I got gunpoint robbed and my Rolex friend turned into history and a split second that felt like a lifetime. I went about life without a Rolex for many years, as a matter of fact I neglected to have a high end watch for many years as I didn't even want to remember. That's how mad the loss of my Rolex made me. Not long ago, one client turned my attention to the Sinn brand and I end up buying my first ever over-USD1K-watch, a Sinn Sa a on a bracelet. While researching on the Sinn I encountered this great discussion board and the love for Rolex left its latent state to awaken in full force. I looked and looked for a good use one that resembled the watch I lost in the hands of these criminals but never got to make up my mind always afraid to be victim of crime again, as I believe that traders of fakes are also criminals. Anyway, just a few hours ago I went to a local AD and got myself my second Rolex. The closest one to my old watch I found was an Air-King with blue dial and arabic numerals which I am now looking at. Its love all over again My new Rolex Air-King My only gripe, the box. Actually is kind of nasty on the outside. I think my mother should still has the box for the old one somewhere. I guess that I am sort of a collector now as I own my Sinn, this new Air-King, my grandfather's gold 1959 Omega Constellation and an old Patek Phillippe from around 1974, also my grandfather's. None of them excite me as much as the Rolex. Last edited by SobeSVT; 21 August 2007 at 08:14 AM.. |
