Why is the Manual Wound more desirable than Auto in Pam?
Hi, I've just joined the dark side and bought myself a 210n. (thx to Mfer for his pics that a 6.5inch wrist is fine with the 45mm rad. What I don't understand is why a manual wound is more desirable than auto?
Can someone enlighten me pls? |

Panerai started making watches using pocket watch movements which are manual wind ofc,so a Pam with a manual movement is said to have more Pam DNA.

the knee-jerk reaction is "DNA"/historical "correctness".....
personally, i think it's just a matter of personal preference on a piece-by-piece basis, but, for some, the "history" of the brand is a major draw to panerai and, in that sense, manuals are preferred regardless of whether one might otherwise prefer an auto over a manual. |

I'm one of those that doesn't mind the manual winding. I guess thats because with the 000, I get at least 56 hours - which is enough time for me to always find a gap in my day to "play" with the winding. I don't find it a chore and actually enjoy it. Might not be so fun if the the power reserve was 40 hours or so and running out of juice before topping it up.
Given the choice though, agree auto's are more practical.

History. I prefer autos to manuals for convenience. I had a 112 and couldn't stand winding it every other day. Too much of a chore for me. Fast foward almost 4 years and I have a 233 on my wrist. No chore at all winding the 233 up once a week or so.

2 things for me.
1. I'm learning that I like manual watches more in general (even outside of Panerai). I like having to power up my watch. 2. A manual movement is thinner. I like larger watches, but don't want a tuna can on my wrist. Thin cases just look a lot better on me for some reason.

manual winding
dear friends,
i recently got myself a 000. this is my first foray into manual timepieces. is it ok to wind the watch before it stops? i usually give it a full winding when it stops. and it will run for about 60 hours. i was just wondering whether will the mechanism be damaged if i wind it prematurely (before the watch stops)… thank you! |

Its truly wonderful experience winding a Panerai watch. Great feel. You really get to know your watch. In fact, after a while, you can sense when you are reaching a full wind....

thanks mfer for your quick reply. so can i say that once the watch has been fully re-wound, the power reserve will be set to another 60 hrs.

Manual= history/DNA. I own 2 base models/manual wind, but I just purchased a 312 auto ,all in-house mvmnt & I gotta say I love BOTH the mvmnts, if I were to have to pick between the 2 I would be hard pressed to make a decision.IMO the new in-house mvmnts = new history
