An AD that does not know watches . . .

Would you buy from an AD who "lied" (probably just didn't know) about a watch.

At the first AD -

all chronometer watches are +-4 sec, but all Rolex watches are +- 2 seconds.

At the second AD -

Salesman: "The chronometer rating is +- 4 seconds"
Me: "huh - I could have sworn it was -4 +6"
Salesman: "Nope +-4 seconds"

Back at first AD: Tells me they are largest AD in Texas when I know that the one just 10 miles down the road is a WAY bigger AD. First AD has ~15-20 Rolexes in stock, Second AD has 100+ Rolexes in stock.

This guy goes on to tell me that warren buffet calls him from time to time to see how the store is going. (the boob actually is the manager) There was more BS I just dont remember.


I think the Second AD was just an honest mistake, but either way I hate it when people say what they don't know about, when they are paid to know about it. I am suppose to be buying from the expert, yet I know more then they do. Why should they get my commission.

LOL, hard question there.

I know firearms; I can build 1911's from the ground up and I'm able to hand file parts the way they should be in order to make a superior custom shooter...what I'm saying is, I know my stuff.

If a gun guy lies -- I usually call his bluff due to the fact that I'm pretty much 99.99% sure that I'm correct. As far as watches go, I'm really just getting into the finer things; I'm new to Rolex, and don't know all the ropes.

With firearms, well, I've been in the game for about 10 years. I know a good deal when I see one and know what to look for on anything that's used and I know how to strip many, many different firearms.

So, would I buy from someone who lies? Probably due to the fact that I can make an educated decision and let the firearm speak for itself. It's easy to strip something down and tell it's history. If something isn't factory, I can usually tell.

Now, with a watch, it's different. I don't know hand sizes, marker sizes, etc. when it gets down to being model specific. I can't pop the back to see what's up with the watch.

Also, there's anohter big difference -- price. It isn't too often that I find firearms costing as much as a Rolex. Yeah, they're out there, but I have no desire to own a $7,000 shotgun. When talking custom shotguns, $7k is at the bottom of the barrel -- they get up to over $100k easily. Custom 1911's? No thanks. I've owned a $2200 custom and then built one shortly after. Many shooters preferred my custom to the $2200 semi-custom I had purchased.

So, all in all, yeah, I'd buy from a FFL who lies only because I could check the thing out inside and out, and be sure of what I was getting.

Hey man, you ought to try Sporting Clays once! You'll start wanting a good shotgun PDQ! I've got a pretty decent scattergun, but I've shot a few and seen a LOT of them that cost as much as a small house! The craftmanship in them is amazing.

I shoot skeet and sporting clays (not trap). Most times, guess what, I use a Remington 870 Express Magnum that has well over 50,000 shells through it. Know what makes it better? It has a plastic stock and fore end. Know what makes it even better than that? I've shot against people with $20-$30k guns and have outshot them. It ain't the gun, it's the shooter. PLAIN AND SIMPLE. I have a decent Beretta semi-auto, as well as about eight other shotguns. For an O/U, I use a Turkish Huglu.

Anyway, the point I'm trying to make -- a $200 shotgun will do just as much as a $50,000 shotgun. Kinda like watches -- a Timex will tell the time, a _______ will just do it in better style. Or, a Kia will get you from point "A" to point "B", but a _______ will just get you noticed while making the journey.

I've got more sense than to buy an expensive shotgun; watches, on the other hand, well...

Well off topic but I shoot clays with a 870 too! ..or as the local 'purists' call it - a trombone. [edit: and 50K shells - that's a bunch!!]

A really good day is about 300 shells skeet shooting. It adds up when doing it a couple days a week.

I don't shoot much anymore, but I'll never sell that 870. Best damn firearm I've ever owned! I only clean it when the pump won't fall down on its own.

Hey I am MUCH more passionate about firearms then watches, so I could care less.

I own 2 870's myself, my shorty 18.5" and my 28". One for shooting birds the other for people who come over uninvited. (well not my mother-in-law)

I appreciate honesty and a high level of knowledge from a dealer just as you guys do. However, I have also been in situations where I was in sales, working for someone else, and they purposely didn't give me accurate information about things and this meant that I sometimes passed along information which wasn't precisely true, but I didn't know this. I think here that you might be assuming that it is always in the owners interest to make sure his employees have proper training and knowledge of, in this case, watches. But did you know that there are a couple of studies which indicate the opposite? Salespeople who are NOT trained often make inaccurate recommendations, but they sell more. Now this study was not done in regard to watches, but to hardware and retail sales situations. My guess is that if the salespeople knew the real truth, they would tell it to you. Knowledge is not "free" and it takes time to acquire it. All I am saying here is that although like you, I value those salespeople who can give me accurate information, this is not always easy for them to acquire. Most of these people are doing a job and they just don't know everything that they should about it. Most people don't keep one job for life, as used to be a quite normal situation, so they don't get the chance to be properly trained and accurately informed.
