30 Rolex watches stolen

I saw this on the news this morning but just for more details. Bernie Robbins in Radnor, PA got robbed yesterday.

4 guys came in with masks, guns and hammers. Smashed the glass and apparently only went for Rolex. Got 30+ watches. Crazy'

What I don't get is that it's 2012. For 1/10th of one watch they can probably get a better security system that records full video, not just frames.

Why in the world wouldn't you have better surveillance in a high end jewelry store?

A lock-door and an unarmed "security" employee?

This happened about a minute from the police station.

Heard it was six guys.

Same M.O. at Boyds last year or so, which had a jeweler operate a watch counter within the store. I was thinking this is a pretty well-organized gang. Ever try to keep a conspiracy among half a dozen people? Gotta have a pretty tight group to keep this kind of thing absolutely secret.

I shopped this store earlier this month. Very upscale located inside the fancy Radnor Hotel with a separate parking lot entrance on a busy road in a prestigious area. The front doors are always locked - you ring a buzzer and they size you up and decide whether or not to let you in.

Nice sales staff, gave me a copy of the new 2012 catalog and the new Perpetual Explorer magazine just for looking. Great collection of Rolex but also Chanel, Cartier, Breitling - no Tags.

Very scary to think you pr your better half could be inside when the bandits strike.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but stolen Rolex's can't be serviced right ? Because they are going to be reported as stolen so no authorised service center would touch one.

So how much would someone pay for a Rolex that they could never get serviced from a proper place ? Maybe £1-2k ? Now £50k six ways isn't exactly worth going to jail for is it ?

Not to mention the fact that 6 people is too many. Just takes one person getting drunk and trying to brag to some girl about it and all the cards fall.

Security camera is shocking. I have a better one watching my car which isn't worth anywhere near as much as a jewelery shop inventory.

I wonder if these robbers realize that this is going to become more difficult as the number of Rolex dealers have decreased in the USA in the previous year :(

And they should have had a jacked up armed guard at the store if they are selling Rolex watches. Just sayin'

Or better yet wear none - get caught and do 30.

I guess you get more money knocking off jewelry stores these days, less risk than a bank, more bang for your buck.

Rolex should put built in micro chips in all watches that way we as owners could log onto a website and track our watches via live GPS

Banks are less targeted since the risk/reward is not good. Cash is good - but dye bombs in the bag.

Jewelers are softer targets with more upside in a 3 minute heist.

PS a microchip wouldn't ping a GPS tracker unless Rolex built radio's into the watch - and that would take us back to that battery thread again

Well consider the cost of the R&D to get such a thing set up. Then the running and maintenance of the GPS site. Then you have to consider some technological virtuoso finds a way to disable the thing a few weeks after Rolex release it.

Not to mention stolen Rolex's don't really affect Rolex do they ? I'm not saying they condone such things but you have to bear in mind if someone steals from an AD/Person then insurance pays out for another watch. I always thought dealers bought the watches from Rolex then sold them on so unless people start stealing from Rolex and not the middle man/end consumer then Rolex really have no reason at all to consider such a thing.

well, if someone in the store had a glock .40 they could have taken out all these guys, now fully auto rifles is another story, I would have not pulled anything and let those guys empty the store...

Jay, like that movie Heat with Robert de Niro, they stold the bonds, the insurance company paid for the missing bonds, then the theives try and sell the bonds back to the original owner for 60% value.

This is really unbelievable, I keep seeing Rolex thefts over and over again from jewelry stores. In the end, these guys will all get what they deserve. There is no doubt they will get caught and hopefully pay for their wrongdoing. Don't know how people can do this and still sleep at night...

Hey, cowboy. There are web forums for mall ninjas and rent-a-cops who will
talk ad nauseum about "taking out" the bad guys.

The store would have been better served by better security up front.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of . . . lead?

I'd bet there are no loose lips within this crew. A tight conspiracy with only one way out of the gang.

But what will the owner do with watches that have serial numbers registered as stolen ?

The problem is there are no repercussions for these type of actions. Prison sentences are not harsh enough, if they are even found guilty.

This is the third one in recent months in the Philly area. They suspect it's the same people.

Maybe it's possible they're selling them overseas? I'm also sure they can get non-rolex dealers to service them if needed. They're out there.

I hope they don't hit the store where I'm picking up my LV from.

The Govberg location in Bala Cynwyd was just robbed this same way, not sure what they ended up taking.
